TC40a was operating and functioning just fine, when i parked it. went back a few days later and could not get it to go into gear. Went back w/manual and adjusted the clutch, to no avail. Would any one/Has any one had this happen to you?? I cannot imagine.. and i would like to know is this a common problem with this model/brand, THX for any reply/advise/????

It could be a stuck clutch disc but with the engine off I would think you could still get it in gear. Have you tried different range gears, or move the shuttle to reverse and forward? Try rolling the tractor a few feet, or jack up the rear so you can rotate the wheels if the gears aren't able to sync as it sets.

Someone posted a similar issue a while back but I don't know what happened with that case. I've had to push the clutch in to get into gear because the gears weren't able to mesh without turning a bit, but it always goes into gear.

Thank you for the reply. I viewed the thread you had referred to and made an attempt to send Jimmy 89 a p-message no response as of yet. Just curious as to what he might have discovered. Any Ways

I went back to my TC40 today started it and using the bucket on the front was able to roll the unit frwd and bkwrd a couple 5-6ft both directions.. thinking this might break free any thing that was stuck (clutch?). (this was performed with the range in N, the shuttle in N, & gear selector in N)

At the end of each frwd and bkwd movement, I moved the levers thru the gears (range in H-M-& L, shuttle F&R, gear 1thru4) while engaging and disengaging the clutch pedal. Eventually the the tractor began to move under engine power as it should?!?!?

Now the tractor responds only in the Hi and Med. Range ---not the Low Range

I examined all the linkages pertaining to this problem and All Looks Good
BUT NOW!!!! it seems to be having a different problem NO LOW RANGE response. I examined all the linkages pertaining to this problem and all looks good (no bent linkages, roll pins and cotter keys in place) Could be related to the original problem??? what do you think? May be another thread addressing this experience

Open the above link.

Click the "+" on (03) TRANSMISSION
Click on (03.05) FRONT TRANSMISSION CASE AND SHIFTER 12X12

That exploded view lets you see the internal parts. The other views will be helpful too of course.

I don't want to mis-lead you into thinking I know the problem, because I don't, but I would suspect something inside the transmission, maybe the shifting forks area. It doesn't sound like you have a broken or damaged gear. If you drain the transmission hydraulic fluid and it's clean with no metal particles, that would tell you something.

BTW My RANGE selector can be in position but not really engaged and the tractor doesn't move, then pulling/pushing on it a bit (with clutch pedal down) it is engaged but the lever doesn't really feel like it moved. I see there is a an improvement kit to deal with range selector jump out so that may be a common thing.

FYI Messick's is a TBN sponsor, good people, and a good source of mail order parts. Their online diagrams are very useful.

Dave I really appreciate your taking time out to reply, and i thank you for the link and your interest of helping me with the problem. I hope that i may return the favor one day soon!!!.

It is very interesting to me, "you mentioning the range selector" position, for when i was going thru the aforementioned exercise, I distinctly remember a different feel,( on one occasion), as i moved the range lever, and, when i approached the "M" position( " it FELT LIKE AND RESEMBLED latching a baby stroller together, not really difficult but a little resistance/bump before the latch)", and THAT IS WHEN THE TRACTOR BEGAN TO MOVE UNDER ITS OWN POWER """" this is hard to describe and difficult to follow,("'i'm sure")"""

ANYWAY:::I want to: "Thank You" again for your input and suggested "Links" you have been a big confidence builder/support team for me. AND IF WE DON'T TALK AGAIN "I want to wish you and yours have a happy and safe ChrisTmas Seaon, "Peace be with you" Thank You

Your are more than welcome, we try to solve/help each other with lot of problems here on TBN and usually someone has the answer. I wish I had experience that would be of more help.

I don't think there are that many TC gear tractor owners here, and transmission problems are not frequent it seems. That may change as these tractors age. My TC40 is a 2003 model closing in on 2000 hours now. Except for excessive wear in the loader and bucket, it's been a good machine that's done a lot of rough work.

I do follow you on how the RANGE selector feels, it's not a real positive in or out feel usually. It always has given me the impression that it is barely engaged, but that doesn't make a lot of sense either. It must be the lack of a strong detent spring or the like. I don't think it likes to be shifted except at a complete dead stop judging by the noises if the tractor is rolling even a wee little bit.

It would be a fairly easy job to open the top of front half of the transmission case. It looks like all that needs to be done is to remove the seat and the case cover bolts. That would let you see what's going on while shifting. The fluid would have to be drained first and you might want a new gasket on hand. The rear half doesn't look too much harder, hydraulic lines for the PTO clutch need to come off, and the seat. There are probably things you can't fix through the top, but it would be a sure and inexpensive diagnosis method.

I hope you let us know what you find, or if you resolved the issue somehow. That's how we all learn. You can keep this thread up near the top where more or the 'right' :) folks will see it, just use "Reply to Thread" and type "bumping--still need help" for the message.

Wishing you and your family the Merriest of Holidays and a Prosperous New Year!
