Hello folks although I have been a member for a little while this is my first post here! Here is my problem, there is a squealing noise on/off coming from under the hood while its running, I thinks it the alternator, so is it possible and would someone already have the part number/vendor for replacement bearings? Any in put would be great!

Have you tried tightening the fan belt?

Its not that kind of sound, its like a bird chirping- but metal to metal sound, totally intermittent, I am debating on buying a $89 alternator from ebay just to have on hand, it beats the $486 from New Holland dealer! I know when it does go it will be at the worst possible time! I know the kubota's people have replaced the bearing in I was just wondering if NH someone has done the same?

What are you doing on the tractor when you hear it?

anytime the tractor is running the noise will start and stop, doesn't matter if its cold for hot, low idle or hi rpm, Sunday I'll have to dig into it a little more. Of course it stops every time I get off to pop the hood! It might be the water pump as well.

Welcome to TractorByNet!

I moved your thread to the New Holland Owning & Operating forum. :)

to rule out the alternator bearing, spray some wd40 in it. Mine started squeaking like a pig after I had power washed the engine compartment a few years back.

The cheapest and best way to find a bad bearing I've seen is to get a 3/8" dowel rod and put one end to your end ear and the other to where you think the questionable bearing is located and listen. You will be able to tell where the squeal is coming from. This is an unbelievable stethoscope. Just be careful to pay attention to where the far end is. It would really hurt to have it pushed back into your ear.

Take the belt off the alternator and see if the noise goes away. If not then take the belt off the water pump and see if the noise goes away. Never touch any of these areas with your hands with the motor running.

You can't take the belt off the alternator without taking it off the water pump too. There's only one belt and it is tightened by the alternator. What you can do is take off the belt and spin the alternator by hand to see if it seems to have rough bearings or makes noise. You can also turn the fan and waterpump in a similar fashion. As you say, both to be done with the engine not running.

If you want to probe around while the engine is running, you can carefully do that with one of these inexpensive stethoscopes from Harbor Freight. Many places sell these and several are available on Amazon.com at about any price you want to pay.
