I have experienced a couple of hydro filter (small filter, forward of the seat on driver side) leaks. Each time I removed,re set the rubber seal, threaded back on,topped off the reservoir, and successfully operated for less than an hr of engine time. Anyway, this time I ordered a new filter in hopes that this annoyance disappears.

OK,here is the question. How much torque should I put on the new filter install? Hand tighten only? More with my water pump pliers? Advice please.

Never put a spin on filter tighter than you can get it with your hands. You will pay for it when its time to change it again if you dont mess the thread up first

Tighten it as tight as you can get it by hand and then try it. If it leaks tighten some more. If not, you're home free. The filter you are talking about is the HST filter. It can see high pressures far greater than engine oil spin-on filters (as high as 200 psi), so the 3/4 turn rule does not apply.

OK, Jinman, I guess when you say "tighten some more" if it continues to leak after installing by hand means I can use the water pump pliers with a light touch?

Yep Cary, you don't want to make the situation worse by distorting the filter body. I like to use strap wrenches and even have a filter wrench that looks like a big pair of Channel Lock pliers. If you have a Harbor Freight close by, they sell both strap wrenches and filter wrenches. Another thing you can use is that rubber shelf liner material. Cut a 8" square section and put it in your toolbox as a gripping aid. It's what we use as a gripping aid for opening tough jars in our kitchen. It works well on a new and clean oil filter too. Your water pump pliers may work just fine too. I really think a new filter and gasket with your tightening as hand tight as you can get it will do the job. The filters have all been made more rugged. That's why I would not use anything but the New Holland filter for the HST filter. NAPA or some other brand wont be as robust as the New Holland filter. When many people had leaks, New Holland changed their design. After-market filters did not.

I'm sure you'll be careful and have good results. Make sure that filter gasket mating surface on the tractor is nice and clean and coat that filter's gasket is fresh hydraulic fluid so it will be lubed. Lubing the gasket/seal also allows you to get the filter a bit tighter.

OK,Jinman, thx again. I already ordered the filter from Messicks two days ago. I guess that is an off-brand filter?

If you ordered from Messicks, surely they will send you the correct NH filter. They know their stuff!

installed filter from Messicks today. The new filter had a wider gasket and the design was different than the old filter I purchased from carquest auto parts strore. The old filter has a rolled inside edge to the groove that holds the gasket and the new filter has a straight edge. Anyway the new filter seems to be ok,only had time to run the motor for about 10 minutes.

Very nice comparison showing the new rugged filter and seal. Thanks!
