I've been having problems with my tilt steering. It does not stay locked in position. Looking at it this past weekend (had the covers off to install additional light switches) all I see is a cylinder behind the steering column (toward the operator). The black lever that the operator moves to tilt the steering wheel is attached to the top of this cylinder. I'll look at it again this weekend but I did not see any obvious ratchet mechanism that would lock the steering wheel in position. I guess the ratchet mechanism is in the cylinder?

I called the dealer. He said that there is a ratchet mechanism up high on the right (I'll look again). He said that they have had some reports of people pulling themselves up onto the tractor by the steering wheel. Pull hard enough and the steering column will bend and no longer engage the ratchet. Anyone else had problems?

Peter,

I have a TC33D and have experienced similar issues with my tilt steering. It won't lock especially when it is cold. After I run the tractor for a while it locks and works fine. It never did this when it was warmer. It appears to be the locking PIN????

Thanks Eric,

I'll check it out. I thought that it was working worse in the cold too (till it no longer worked period). Maybe it has not gotten warm enough?

So am i to gather that pulling yourself up by the steering wheel is a no no ..??? If it is I had better change my ways, its all I've been doing to climb aboard the thing, but I have to say no problems yet with steering wheel adjustment. but then again ive only put roughly 30 hours on it

Justin,

It's unclear to me if the ratchet exists where the dealer says it does. I looked hard the first time and I just didn't see it. I'll look again tomorrow and let you know.

Hey Justin,

Well unfortunately I didn't get the time to check it this past weekend. On top of it all the tilt started working again. All I did was pull the tilt all the way down and it started engaging again. Maybe the cold got it? Right now my tractor is about 30 miles away, so I can't just go in the garage to check it out. I really do think that the ratchet mechanism is in the cylinder and not somewhere else. Just in case, I'll be more careful pulling myself up without using the steering wheel (at least not pulling real hard). In fact a good addition would be a couple of welded handles right on the loader booms near the rearmost pivot pin. Right now I generally do not put my hands on the loader due to the high probability of getting a greasy hand.

If you want to look around yourself then remove the right cover (as you sit in the seat) that is just under the dash. There are only 4 screws the hold it on. 2 are accessable from the operator platform and 2 are accessable when the hood is open (way in the back on the firewall toward the outside and bottom). That's it! Real easy, nothing else needs to be moved. The left panel is much harder to remove owing to the muffler.

I'm glad your enjoying your TC. I hope it stays that way; I feel partially responsible /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Seriously, I'm very pleased with my machine and have not had any major (or even minor) problems to speak of. Any update on the import of the FELs?

When I bought my TC40D I asked my dealer what type of engineering problems they had experienced with NH units (was thinking of JD's problems). Dealer said that the only problem they had seen was with the steering column cylinder not locking. Supposedly there were not enough problems to issue a recall but if you talk to your dealer and have them talk to the regional reps the cylinders have been replaced under warranty.

Hope this helps

Thanks Dave!

How are those huge piles of dirt coming? With this cold weather the toothbar probably makes all the difference.

Ok cool thanks Peter very much i will check it out...unfortunately i live approx 500KM's from my tractor ... so not much chance of checking it out till i get up there next time...strangely enough the unit i tested (TC45D) had been sitting out in the weather at the dealership and the telescoping mechanism on the steering wheel didnt work...the salesman said it was probably because it had been sitting out in the weather....I have to say though if thats the only thing that goes wrong on my tractor i'll be a happy man. And yes you were partly responsible for the purchase of a NH but you and i think it was MarkC were definitely responsible for me getting a Hydro model. :)

While on the subject though i have a question for you ...i bought a 7' HD Jarrett back grader blade weighs about 200 kg's i have pretty steep sloping land i was clearing over Christmas .. and naturally i was grading down hill...( the machine and blade did a great job).. but a few times when i was reversing back uphill i lowered the blade to level off the soil as i was going backwards. While i was doing this the tractor tended to stall...or cut out on an off .... it was acting like it had water in the fuel. i lifted the blade slightly so not as much pressure was being applied... and it seemed to fix the problem...can you possibly shed some light on what is happening...i personally think.. and iam proabbly way off the mark here, that the HST is set to work harder in forward that it is in reverse...iam not sure how this could be so though ...

Justin

PS on the FEL i emailed NH Australia about it just before i took delivery and havent recieved a response from them as yet, they seem to be in disarray following the merger of NH and Case Australia. So iam not holding my breath waiting for a reply. If i get desperate to get one maybe i could do it all myself with NH NA.
