I have a TC35D and noticed the battery was spilling over some acid where the battery is, so making a mess in the tray. Anyway I thought it might be the battery problem with a short or something, but today I checked the voltage when I had it running and it was 15.4 so I assume this is overcharging. Can anyone direct me to where the problem might be ? I'm not a mechanic but if you can give me an idea of where to look I might be able to replace something to fix this problem. Thanks

Yep, it sounds like your voltage regulator is toast. It should be 14 something not 15 something. The battery is probably bad now too. Your regulator is likely part of and internal to your alternator. I'd yank the alternator and take it to an automotive electrical shop that services alternators, starters and stuff like that. They can likely put it right again but also start looking for a new battery.

Dick, Thanks and that's exactly what I was thinking but didn't want to get a new alternator if it could be something else. I will do what you say take it out and go from there. Thanks for the help

How old is the tractor? A bad ground on the VR could give a false reference. Just like, I sometimes add diodes to the ground terminal of IC voltage regulators (.6 volt per diode) when I don't have the right value of regulator.

I have noticed that the gauge on my GMC read even higher than 15 volts and have often wondered about this. The batteries lasted for seven years, so clearly, they are not boiling.

You rarely need a new alternator. Alternators can often be repaired or swapped with a rebuilt for much less money. Although not in this case, most alternator failures can be remedied with a set of new brushes for just a few bucks. Easy and cheap to do, as the hardest part is the R&R. BTW there are also stand alone solid state regulators that won't set anyone back much. All it does is monitor the alternator output voltage and regulate the current to the field winding (part of the rotor) accordingly.

I think my tractor is a 2005. I don't think its the ground as I do believe that its cooking the battery. I can hear it when I shut down and there is acid all around the front of the battery.

I can get a remanufactured alternator for 78.00 shipped , so I will probably go that route as that doesn't seem bad to me. It would probably cost more than that to fixed the old one, at least that's what I'm thinking anyway. The tractor only has around 850 hrs on it, but I guess something can go at any time. I'll keep the old one just in case. Also good to know about the stand alone solid state regulators, I didn't know that.

If it was me. I would start the thing, remove the battery and hook up a large electrolytic capacitor in it's place and take a voltage reading. Just as a further confirmation. We all ***** about Chinese stuff, but it is nice to find all these cheap alternators and starters on E-Bay.

That sounds good. Any certain size cap should I use ?

At least 25 Volts to be safe, 1000 MFD or larger. OBSERVE CORRECT POLARITY.

If voltage it is really high, don't turn anything on. Just wait for a new alternator/regulator.

If the voltage is only slightly high, I would switch on various loads, like the lights and observe voltage for signs of regulation.
