My friend has a tc33d and the pto will not disengage when you step on the clutch. He says the clutch should move a rod that heads towards the back of the tractor but it doesnt. Does anyone know a common cause of this problem. I found a parts diagram online and the part he believes should move with the cluch is the internal shaft the clutch pedal rides on it is conected to a rod that is conected toward the back of the trans or maybe the axle. View attachment 291503

Thats shows the rode and shaft but I dont see how the clutch should engage it.

in diagram clutch is 1 shaft is 3 and rod is 6

any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

The clutch on a TC 33D disengages all moving parts behind the engine and ahead of the transmission. When you depress the clutch, forward motion and everything else should stop. If this is not happening, then the clutch plates have rusted together and you will have to try and break them free. To confirm the clutch is rusted, push the clutch in while traveling forward. If it is rusted, you will not stop. If this is the case, now we have to try and break it free. My suggestion is to select a sturdy tree, put the front bumper against it, put the transmission in low or #1, push the clutch in and slowly push on the tree with the hydro pedal. Hopefully, you will build enough torque to cause the clutch to slip. If you succeed, continue to work the clutch to polish the rust off of it. Enviorments with high humidity, tractor sitting outside every night, etc, promote the clutch rusting. Some people block the clutch pedal down to prevent this from happening. Good luck and I'm sure there will be other suggestions to your problem.

I havent drove the tractor myself but I know my friend took it to a shop and they changed the tran oil. So I would believe if the clutch was sticking they would have noticed it. I dont know how a 2 stage clutch works if there are two seperate clutches then the one that works the pto could be stuck. I did ask my friend if it would go into gear after you mentioned this he said it would and only problem with the shifting was after a little while of running it the gears will grind a little when trying to shift. I do thank you for your post do you know if there are 2 seperate clutchs or could just the pto side of the clutch stick. Also is there a clutch inspection plate and where is it located.

Thanks again

Haddon, what Halftrack is saying is very likely the problem. If your friend's tractor is a TC33D model, the "D" stands for Deluxe and means he has an HST transmission. Because the HST goes to neutral when the pedal is centered, you can shift the Range Lever without grinding gears. What your friend should do is to first depress the clutch fully and then step on the HST pedal at the same time. If the tractor moves, the problem is the clutch. It could be that the clutch is stuck or that it is way out of adjustment. Normally as clutches wear, they go out of adjustment and begin to slip, so being out of adjustment and not releasing would be very unusual. For that reason, everything points to a stuck clutch. The TC33D only has a single stage clutch, so it's not a dual stage like gear tractors often have. Your friend could have a problem with the PTO shift linkage, but first he needs to verify that his clutch is working by seeing if the HST will move the tractor with the clutch pedal depressed.

My friend looked in his manual he doesnt have the hst. He said he doesnt have that pedal. So would that mean he would have 2 clutches

Ok, it sounds like we are dealing with a TC 33 which has the 9X3 manual gear transmission. This tractor has a 2 position clutch, depressing the clutch half way should stop forward motion and depressing all the way, disengages the pto (s). There is the possibilty that the linkage from the pedal to the throw-out bearing pivot shaft is too long (it is adjustable) and the second release position is not being reached. This would be evident if it takes nearly the full depression of the clutch, just to stop forward motion. This would agree with the comment that there is some gear grinding after it is warmed up and you are not obtaining full clutch release for the first position and none at all for the second position. My manual states there should be 3/4" to 1 1/4 inches of pedal free play before you feel engagement of the throw-out bearing. Hopefully, this is the case and a simple adjustment of the linkage will solve the problem. SCAN0071.JPG

Your friend is correct in that there are 2 clutches, but they are contained in one assembly next to the clutch pedal. You might say the pto clutch is stacked on top of the transmission clutch and pushing the throw-out bearing part way disengages one and all the way disengages both. Again, hopefully it is a matter of adjustmet, but there is still the possibility that the pto clutch is frozen or rusted together and will have to be broken free or disassembled. The 2 position clutch was designed to allow you to engage a mower or tiller prior to forward travel and to shift gears without disengaging the mower or tiller. The parts diagram I looked at does display an inspection hole with a rubber plug near the adjustment linkage. Hope this helps and we have solved the problem.
