Tractor
TC 30 (Sold D17 and miss it)
Was almost set to buy the TC30 and stopped at the JD dealer, now I don't know which way to go. Price of tractor and equipment is pretty comparable, so decision is what are the differences in the two? Both are standard tran, both with loader, belly mower, bushhog (TC is Bushhog brand, JD is Woods), both with trailer. TC30 @ $21,933 or JD 790 @ $21,500. I believe both will do the job and be good solid durable tractors, so help out. What are the pluses/minuses here, or do I choose based on color or a coin flip. Any thoughts anyone has would be helpfull. Thanks

At close to 22000 bucks, both are way too high, IMHO.
The 790 should go for around 15K including a FEL. The mower would add a couple thousand, if bought at retail. The rotary cutter should be a 60" unit...maybe a thousand.

Frankly, either of these machines should be 19K tops. When I read the prices, I went back through your post looking for a backhoe included.

I looked at both tractors a while back. I bought the 790 because I got a really good price on a 2003 model with 24 hours on it. That was $12500 for the tractor and 419 (Deere) loader. It's a robust tractor...but so is the TC-30 (but, compare the front axles...I just think the Deere is a bit more stout).

Since both New Holland and Deere offer their own loaders, why do these machines have aftermarket units? Are they used machines?

So, it'll be a coin flip...but as I mentioned...those prices a really high.

Maybe you should look a bit more, or do more negotiation.

Sorry all, just reread my first post (for about the 4th time - so I'm slow) forgot, both include a lawn vac/chipper/shredder with 8 horse motor priced at $2,200 in on both bids.

I looked at the same two units you are comparing along with the Kubota L2800. I found the same thing many people have, that even though the JD790 is an excellent tractor with a solid track record, it was just a little too small in the operator's compartment. For me it ended up coming down to price and I chose the Kubota. The dealer I purchased from sold both the Kubota and NH. What sold me on the Kubota is that the salesman sold the same tractor to his brother over the NH saying that the NH did not justify the extra $$. I think it's worth a look since they compare closely with the NH and JD.

Thanks Tim, the JD dealer also has Kubota. Don't remember what it was but the L2800 didn't work out. Does it have a mid PTO? or maybe it only comes with Hydro tranny which I don't want. May check it again, just to make sure. Terry

Tryno,

I experienced the same dilema when I bought my tractor about 16 months ago. After extensive research, I pretty much had settled on purchasing either the JD790 or NH TC30 but had a hard time making a final decision. I was leaning towards getting a hydro trans which the 790 didn't offer. Also, at the time I was able to get a better deal on the TC30 (purchased mine through Corriher in North Carolina). You may find the info contained in the following link useful. Both are good tractors - good luck in making your final choice!

Roy I got to agree with you. Them prices do seem high for the Midwest.

Ok so if $19,000 is the top and add $2,200 for the yard vac/chipper that would make it around $21,200. The trailer would go for another $600+ or did you include it in the $19,000? Right now I'm leaning toward the TC30 for a couple of reasons. One I believe the spec show it with more lifting power on the 3ph and loader and two the JD dealer has a rep (at least with me) of being a jerk. Got a super nice saleman this time but always before jerks - salesmen and parts department. New Holland parts guys are nice and salesman is good (not as friendly as the JD guy but much more knowledgable). Both quoted $6500 for a backhoe, TC30 would be 72 mths @ 4.9% and zero down, JD790 is 84 mths @6.9% with zero down.

JD deal would leave enough wiggle room for a backhoe but $6500 sounds high.

The hoe price is about right for what they are getting for them.

Either one is a good machine, the money is equal for all intents and purposes, you are down to dealer and you say the JD guy has a questionable rep.

I think you have your answer.
