Tractor
NH TC29D
Went and looked at a 24D today. Got a price quote for the tractor, 12LA FEL, 60" MMM and backhoe (posted in the buying and pricing forum). After reading through some of the older posts, I see there may be a question of whether ot not the BH and MMM are compatible. May have to go with RFM. Anyone know anything about this?

As the dealer will have to install the FEL and BH, is there anything special I should request now to allow for future options (such as rear remote, 4-way valve for FEL, etc)? If anything is cheaper to do now than later, I would certainly want to know.

I forgot to ask the dealer about a quick attach system for the FEL bucket. Again, after reading some previous posts, I see where this may not be a viable option for this tractor now. Anyone know for sure? Would like to get pallet forks, boom pole. Is this doable?

How about the 3PH? I noticed it lacked some of the features I saw on a TC29D such as this little crank thing to adjust the hieght of the lower right arm as well as a telescoping lower arms. Can the 3PH be upgraded? are 3PH implements difficult to attach?

Work lights on the rear? Should I have the dealer install them or is this easy for a novice to do himself?

Any comments or suggestions or concerns about the 24D in general?

Thanks to all who respond. I really like this tractor but haven't had to live with it yet and I want to be ready to adress its limitations/quirks.

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,

I would definately check into the Back hoe and MMM. I have heard there is some problems with the two but check with your dealer. I have a TC29D but don't have the Back hoe. I sure love my 72"MMM. You will love your 60". I had that one on my TC21D.

As far as the lights. New Holland is going to charge you an arm and a leg for them. I had them quoted for my TC29D and it ran over $200.00 and that was for two lights pointed to the front. Based on other conversations here you can do it a lot cheaper. I have already bought my lights, $7.88 and waiting for the magnet mounts to attach to my ROPS and then I can point them any direction I want. If you have a loader you will want to be able to face the front also. The magnets are about $15.00. Anyway much cheaper.

As far the 3PH. I have never had to use my crank arm on it. My 21 didn't have one, my 29 does but never touched.

I do link my extend a links though. I didn't have them on my 21 but most of the attachments moved around fairly easy. But if you can get them on the 24 I would go for it. I guess I don't know how much monies they would be.

Hope this helps you.

My tractor is a TC18 with 12LA and shares many of the same situations with the 24D. On the quick attach system for a bucket, I contacted two makers of skidsteer type systems - Kasco and ATI. Both discouraged my from using something that heavy with the 12LA. Kasco has not developed a system that fits the 12LA, but offered a "universal" system that weighed more, added more distance between the arms and bucket and cost more, than a model-specific system. ATI ("Tach All") said they had checked the 12LA for their system, and the sizes would interfere with the operation of the skidsteer release mechanism. Instead, they have just developed a pin-type system for the 12LA which involves hooks for the top pins and bottom pins that operate similar to the FEL Quick Release pins. I haven't ordered the system yet, because I'm fabricating my own bucket replacements (tree scoop, brush rake, boom pole and maybe pallet forks down the road - I got rear pallet forms with my tractor), and nothing is finished.

On the 3PH convenience items - the extendable side links would be a nice convenience, but overall price was very important to me, and I didn't think it was worth thousands of dollars to upgrade to the Class II Boomers to get these and other convenience items. If and when it gets to be a pain in the butt to hook up the 3PH stuff, I'll spend $180 on a TSC Quick Hitch, or even a lot more $$$ for something like a Freedom Hitch, and still be $$$ ahead on my overall investment, especially when you consider that even the Class II flexible 3PH stuff is not as nice as any of the quick hitch thingies.

I will be using the 3PH hitch tilt "feature" when I start grading swales and crown for my future driveway, but I'm willing to use the more inconvenient turnbuckle style tilt on my 3PH rather than pay the aforementioned thousands to get the little crank.

According to the NH owner's manual, the TC18 can only have one remote hydraulic added, in addition to the hookups for the FEL. I don't know if the 24D can have more, or not. I plan to order this remote for mine. I have a hydraulicly operated rear pallet fork setup and will use it for that. I may also add a hydraulic top link for the 3PH that can be operated with the remote when I'm not using the pallet forks. If I could get another remote, I'd add the hydraulic tilt for the 3PH and not worry about the manual adjustments.

In other words, no matter whether you have the fancy Class II 3PH setup or the basic Class I setup, it's likely you might upgrade to a quick hitch and hydraulics, so why waste the $$$ on the fancy stuff in the first place?

Frankly, that's why I got the 18 instead of the 24D. I have no need for the extra horsepower (Florida is Flat!), and I wasn't willing to pay a premium for a fancier seat, tilt wheel and wraparound headlights. My 12LA and 3PH capacities are the same as the 24D, and that's the real power I need, not horsepower.

All of the above is not intended to convince anyone that my way is better; just sharing the thoughts I went through in case they match up and help someone else.

Murph,
Thanks for the tip on the lights. Where did you get the magnetic mounts?

I'm waiting to hear back from my dealer about the BH/MMM compatibility. I'll ask about the extend-a-links then.

Appreciate the reply.

Kevin,

Sure is a looker! Is the attachment a pic of your tractor? I see in your profile you have a B2410. Just wondering if you have both or if one replaced the other. Can you offer comparisons?

Thanks,

Bruce

Don,
Thank you for the in-depth reply. I had read in another thread your discussion of the quick attach dilema and was wondering if the ATI plate for the 12LA was in production. I too would like a front mounted boom pole and pallet forks. I would love the see some pics of yours when you complete fabrication.

Is the hydraulic tilt and top link compatible with the Freedom hitch and/or quick hitch? As you can tell, I don't know enough about tractors to even know if this is a dumb question.

Once again, I thank you for the detailed reply.

Bruce,

I have ordered them from Harbor Freight. The part number is 30754-ovga. They are called magnetic ground blocks. The only problem is I don't have mine yet. They are on back order for the second time.

There was another post here on TBN where a guy did that and they looked nice. That is were I came up with the idea.

The ATI pin-type quick hitch is sort of in production - they have one in the field for testing, and one on the shelf. But, they are apparently a small enough company to be able to respond quickly to an individual order - the engineer to whom I spoke said there would be no problem getting one out right away. I was impressed by his expertise, his willingness to share that expertise, and his friendliness.

(Laughing) Boy, I fooled you with that "in depth" reply, didn't I? Your question is not so dumb, since I don't have a definitive answer, either. However, I'll go out on a limb, based on the pictures I've seen - a hydraulic top 'n tilt should be compatible with either one. Essentially, the various quick hitches attach to your standard 3PH, and then the implements attach to the quick hitches. If you lengthen or shorten the top link, it will move the top of the quick hitch back and forth, and if you change the angle, whether using the hand crank, the turnbuckle on the TC18, or a hydraulic cylinder, the quick hitch will tilt, in turn tilitng the implement. Here's a link to the Freedom Hitch , and one to the Land Pride Quick Hitch , which is the same or similar to the one sold at Tractor Supply.

(Edit) Freedom Hitch has a hydraulic top link kit available for $225; does not include quick disconnects.

Definitely YES!
