I know there is another thread about TBN being to friendly. I though this thread deserved it own title. Wile lurking through another site [about lawn care] i learned something interesting. TBN is a great site, what i mean is the people are supportive, very helpful and yes even nice. This other site has great ideas, but nice and helpful people not really. IE if some builds a pond the 1st few comment are usually suportive then the bad comment come in, here is what I would do, it doesn't look natural, the rocks are to straight etc,.
It seems most of these people are professional but always looking to pick on someone else work. I enjoy the ideas but don't read the rest on the threads anymore, and god help me if i ever posted there, i think i would start to cry:( :( :(
TBN is supportive and the concept of competion is not high. I can handle peoples opinion but don't like being beaten down for something i feel proud to post.
Sorry for the rant, but i feel better now.

I think one distinction needs to be made here.

i believe you are talking about 2 different kinds of posts.

Type 1, Just showing what i have accomplished.

Type 2, showing what i have built, and looking for opinions or comments.

In type 2, it is expected that you are looking for an honest evaluation, and/or ideas of how to do it better / differently/ how it is done elsewhere.

Can't do a type 2 kinda post and then get dismnayed cause people did what ya asked... Thus make sure wording in posts states what you are looking for in an outcome.. etc.

Otherwise.. yeah.. some pretty nice flks here.. and there are always more ways to skin a cat.. etc.

My complaint is with the other site certainly not this one. Constructive criticism is fine, but the other site CC are things like, that retaining wall has a 1/4" gap on one block about 1/3 of the way down, MY guys would have done it right the 1st time, or in the 2 pics you have posted i see no drainage pipe therefore they assume there is no drainage and the wall will collapse after the truck drives away [again MY guys would have done it right the 1st time].
That to me is not constructive it is abusive.
I guess what i am saying is i like this site for the support and not for the competion.

I understand your point.. but ( gotta have a but.. ) we are all human. If i built something and somone noticed.. or didn't notice something important.. ( like that drainage pipe! ).. I'd deffinately want to hear about it.. even if i have to reply that it is off in another pic / not visible. How many of us have built something to only have to tear it down a little later to change a 10 cent item! ( i have!!! ).. but yeah.. nobody likes 100% negative.. and you can give CC without being negative.. etc.

Shane,

I'm guilty of critisizing from time to time, but try real hard to do it in a way that's supportive, or maybe I just don't understand what's going on, so I try to learn from what they have done. I've also been at the negative end of some really wild comments that come out of nowhere without any supportive argument as to why I'm an idiot, or did it wrong. When that happens, I question the poster and usually never hear from them again. Sometimes they reply in the thread, but most of the time they insult me in a PM and act like we're best friends in the threads.

Of course, those people are very rare here and easily 99% of those here are either looking for help, or to share something interesting. It truly is amazing the diversity and level of knowledge that shared freely on this site!!! It almost doesn't matter what you need to know about, there is an expert here who can answer your question.

I know I've found a home here and it just seems to keep getting better and better!!!!!!

While TBN policies define the boundaries of appropriate behavior, the vast, vast majority of TBNers are never moderated because they don't need to be.

What makes TBN successful are all these participants, who come to get and give advice and freely share information and their wisdom. While some have more experience, the vast, vast majority of TBNers know they can always learn from others and post in a manner that displays a sincere desire to assist and to learn.

When I was younger, I made a lot of "art". I made it for my personal enjoyment. I was never one to take criticism well, especially when I didn't ask for it.

However, some people want their worked critiqued as a way to afirm to themselves that the work is good. The hard part is taking it in the proper context and not taking offense when the criticism is harsh.

Of course, there are some folks that just plain like to put everyone's work down no matter how good it is. Those you just have to learn to ignore. :)

Yup...This site is definately one of the better forums out there. I am just getting to know some of you regulars and I guess I am becoming a regular, too. I've learned more here than any other site...mostly because of the varied topics and knowledge base of the people. To have a tractor leads to having land, barns, livestock, hunting, etc.

Criticism IS lower here and I think most of us are aware of other people's feelings. It is a more mature bunch than most other places.

Hmmmmm, I like TBN. I like it a lot.

I'm luckier than most in that I've been fortunate enough to have met quite a few, say forty or so, in real life at different times. The vast majority, forty or such, have been every bit or more the person they are on line.

Actually TBN reflects a philosophy I have about business. That is the bottom is a reflection of the top. I've met Hakim, his sons, and his wife. TBN is very much a reflection of my impression of them.

I don't know why but online often I see the side of people I see in the real world when there's not enough work to go around. I'm sure you can relate to what I'm saying. When people aren't busy they sometimes become busybodies. Busybodies unlike busy people, are a distraction, a negative one.

The good thing about the internet is it's big enough for everyone to find their place. Like the old addage about birds of a feather flocking together busy people find their own kind and the busybodies do too.

There will always be busybodies stirriing it up on TBN. Instead of getting upset with them I suggest doing what I do. I assume they're looking for their place and checking TBN out to see if it's where they belong. Ignoring them is the best way I know of politely helping them along their way.
