Back in April, I mailed a check for my spring property taxes. It is typical for our tax collector to take a very long time to cash checks. I guess I should have checked back, but I didn't. The check was not cashed. In December, I received a past due notice. After attempting to call the tax collector multiple times over several days, I finally go through. Even though I provided her with check dates and numbers, she claims to have no record of my payment.
The next day, I mailed her another check for the spring taxes, and the penalty. The tax collector promised to call me to confirm receipt. After a week passed, I emailed her. Several days passed, so I started calling, but could not get through. Now here we are, it is after January 1, and my check still has not been cashed. Thankfully, this tax collector was voted out of office. However, the new tax collector tells me that she cannot access anything or help in any way. She explained that her phone has been ringing off the hook with people in the same situation as me. She contacted the county controller and the courthouse, but was told that the tax collector is an elected official and that essentially no one has oversight other than the voters.
It seems that our tax collector just closed up shop when she was voted out and is leaving all of us tax payers to fend with the courthouse and penalties. I am left with no other choice but to wait until I get a past due notice from the courthouse and then I will have even more penalties to pay.
