Tractor
Many but mostly ford diesels or ihc or jds
I have a fully restored ford 3000. it's only got 3.5 hours on it and just finished the whole project. The tractor has a tar like supstance leaking from around the new muffler and muffler clampdown the manifold to the top of the hydraulic filter and it's not runny unless it's hot soon as it cools its mor tarry and even whrn It's hot it's not very fluent any ideas what this is and what is causing it

I'm far from being a diesel expert, but it sounds to me as if you've got a simple exhaust leak, assuming the leak you're referring to is actually on the exhaust pipe.

Yeah but my concern is what's running out the exhaust leak you know the tar like stuff and whats causing it

My guess would be that it's the residue left over from unburned diesel fuel in the exhaust stream.

That's what I was thinking but why this timing or something the tractor runs great and isn't very smokey

If it's a diesel it's "wet stacking' from not be operated at high EGT's. Diesels, unlike spark ignition engines, operate over a wide range of fuel air ratios and hence a wide range of peak gas temps in the cylinder. It's hard to warm up a tractor diesel at idle because the peak temperature is so low. The result is a a mixture of unburned fuel and partial burned products of combustion and carbon. My powerstroke has a special exhaust "choke" for warm up to "enrich" the low rpm fuel air ratio whcih increases the peak gas temperature and helps it to warm up.

Take you tractor out and work the snot out of it and that tarry, unburned fuel slobber will go away.

You don't need to run at max power for 8 hrs and you'll never break it in at idle! Just use good sense . Try to vary the speed and load across the power range. Go mow on the flat for awhile, then do some hillsides, etc.
