Depends on how much wood you split, for a home owner like me who splits only a cord or two a year, the care and feeding of another gas engine is a pita. So I gave away my gas splitter and use a 3pt splitter. When the back hoe is on, I just unplug the hydraulics from the BH and plug them into the the 3 pt splitter, which sits on saw horses. By fall I usually have the BH off and the splitter on the tractor. With the splitter on the tractor I find it very convenient since you can raise it up to a comfortable height for small rounds and put it on the ground to break down heavy stuff to a manageable size. Another eight or ten hours of tractor run time is a non issue for me.
The 3 pt splitters are slow, no doubt about that, but my days of splitting fast and furious are long gone. Me and the splitter are going about the same speed these days.
