I have some fence work to do. First my wife wants a running area for our dogs. Then I need to fix some fence around our Llama pasture. When putting field fence up using t-post. Does the fence go on the inside of the t-post or the outside. My old pasture fence has a mix of both and I see other fences using a mix of both. My wife wants it on the outside for a "smoother" looking fence. I wanted it on the inside to give more push over stregnth to the fence. Any right or wrong answer to this issue?

I usually put the t-posts on the outside, and the fencing on the inside, putting the flat part of the t-post facing inwards. The exception to this is on curves, where putting the fence on the outside is stronger. I have seen it done both ways as you mention, and many people do put all the fence on the outside for appearances sake, but it will not be as strong and durable.

Curious...what kind of fence do you use for llamas?

unaka

Used oil field pipe for corners and put down a pipe after every three tee posts. Ran horse wire and a dual strand top wire without barbs to steady the tee posts. Even then have to retighten the fence because they love to rub on the the wire.

Yeah...I have sort of the same problem with cows which is why I run one single strand of electric around the inside of the fence. They always like the grass just on the other side of the fence and will push their necks through and slowly loosen wire and even uproot posts. I can see the charger light from my bathroon and I know if it is off then I need to walk the fence line. It's a pain sometime to have to walk the fence line but it's a nice system because I can tell if something is wrong, i.e. when a tree falls on the fence or something like that. One time I noticed it was off, walked the fence, and found a heifer stuck in the fence on the far side of the farm. That charger light probably saved her life.

I was told put the wire on the inside of the area being fenced. This allows the T-post to brace the wire if an animal inside the area pushes against it.

Women worry about cosmetics. Men worry about functionality. Rarely do the two agree. My wife would rather freeze than wear a hat or boots that don't match. It seems to me the "right" way is with the fence on the inside, but you might be able to do it the cosmetic way if you can feel assured it will be strong enough. I don't know anything about Llamas, so I can't make a guess on how hard they might push on a fence. You might consider fastening the fence to each pole in more places to make it stronger.

Seymour has it right. To keep peace in the family, remember two rules:

1. If she ain't happy, you ain't happy.
2. When in doubt, go with rule number 1.

Seriously tho it is wire inside if you have animals that push fence.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker getting around here (one I'd like but not game to put on !!!)

It says ...

If mama aint happy, aint nobody happy

How true is that /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

The version I have heard of it goes:

If she aint happy, you aint happy...
And if she aint happy long enough,
you are going to be unhappy with half of your stuff.
