I just bought a new JD 3720 and the mechanic didn't recommend going to synthetic for the engine oil. Something about the emission sensors and such.

Is he giving me a line or should I listen.

I ran Amsoil in my NH and it worked great.

Thanks
Bob

John Deere sells a full synthetic oil. Check your owners manual for the oil requirements and buy the oil that has the proper rating synthetic or not.

He was giving you a "line". It's sad but true that most mechanic's don't really know much about lubrication. Most don't even understand the API rating's.

I was told that you should use dino until the engine was run in as synthetic oil doesnt seat the pistons

I always change over to full synthetic after 50 hours of break-in.

I have used synthetic in the winter for easier starts. It lubricates better in cold weather.

I run synthetic in everything I own that has a motor. My shop air compressor, lawn mowers, and my Harley.
The tales are still roaming about how synthetic won’t seat your pistons, your engine will leak etc. Don’t listen to it. Sure if you run synthetic in motors that were built in the 70’s you are bound to start getting oil leaks. With the advancement in Synthetic oils and its benefits engine builders took note. Engines are of closer tolerances now. A current Chevy 350 engine actually has almost twenty five percent less gaskets in the motor compared to the same motor built in the 70’s. Also, with Synthetic motor oil please realize that you are only getting a couple of ounces of actual synthetic oil in that quart. Better then two thirds of the quart is standard oil. (Synthetic needs a carrier). This also blows off the notion that once you use Synthetic you can never go back to regular oil. One other note, if a dealer ever tells you that you need to run “their brand of oil and no other brand” the dealer has to supply you with their oil – Free of charge for as long as you own your vehicle. Run Synthetic!

Bob,

Synthetic all the way, man, especially living in NY. I assume you are going to use your tractor some in winter also. The 3720 has a tight motor and the turbo bearings, etc. would appreciate synthetic. I changed over after my 50 hour service and I think mine runs better. I know the fuel economy seems better.

Thanks for all the responses....I am going to change over at 50 hours. The question now is, do I use the JD 0-40 or Amsoil? I used Amsoil 15-40 HD diesel in my NH. Should I use that or the 10-30 Amsoil diesel oil?

Thanks again for all the help...this forum is great...

Where I live I would go 15w-40, but you might wish to go lighter, especially in winter. My tractor is parked inside and never really is exposed to cold without running (although it does get quite chilly here in winter) but I still would go 15/40. You already have good results from the NH usage.
