Over the weekend I found a plow in my back field that was last used by my father when I was a kid (20 years ago). I am looking to sell it but I have no idea what it is worth if anything. I also haven't been very successful in finding information about it. The only thing that I found so far on it was markings on the plow boards that indicate "Syracuse Chilled Plow Co" Syracuse NY. It does look like it was originally green in color. i attached a couple of pictures if that helps.

Its a collectors item for a farm tool collector; I would place an advert on Craigslist and www.tractorhouse.com

There are a lot of folks that collect farm machinery and restore it.

There is quite a long thread about the Syracuse chilled plow here and it is very interesting.

They built plows for Deere as well to break the prarie sod and was very successfull at it.

Being a plow aficionado, I'll weigh in on this...OLD Iron like this is hard to price for a few reasons. Like anything else it boils down to what someone else is willing to pay, LOL

+ Value
OLD iron like that is getting extremely rare
It does have a Major MFG lineage

- Value
OLD Iron..because extremely rare, parts are also EXTREMELY Rare if not available at all. So if any parts are missing or broken, this whole plow may be relegated to the scrap heap or end up as a parts plow.

Seriously speaking If you were in my neighborhood Id offer you $50.00 as I think thats pretty fair for what I can see. That looks to be what a 2-12?

Um.. isn't it worth around $50 in scrap steel price? 500 lbs at around 11 cents a pound? I bet it's worth more than $50 to someone.. Not me but someone.

Not me but someone.

Exactly my point....You're absouletly right on that.

Looking at it, I wouldnt give more then 50.00, MAYBE I'd go up to $75 if its puff and all there, but seriously its gonna be a major money pit. Trust me.

Really depends on the current owner of the plow...Ive bought old farm items for LESS then scrap iron price becuase they knew it was going to be restored vs sent to china to make new HF Sockets.

I guess probably the best/fairest way would be weigh her up and sell it for scrap metal value. Again...if you were in my neck of the woods, I'd probably go along with that.

Thanks for the responses so far. I thought about the scrap metal aspect of it, but I figured that it was probably worth more than $50 to someone that needed it for parts.

After reading your responses so far, I guess that it will end up being scrap metal if I don't get any responses on Craigslist.

Aw, man, now it is going to come back to haunt us as HF tools:D

The $50 will be gone and fogotten quickly. I would keep it for the sentimental value if it had belong to my father. That value would easily exceed $50, to me anyway. Especially if I could remember my dad using it. Spray it with thinned oil(some of the fancy biodegradable chain saw bar oil maybe?) to preserve it and use it for a center piece in some area of the yard. Heck, put it next the barn or tractor shed or what ever and let it be a bird feeder. But dont throw it away for scrap metal. Who knows, someday someone might make you a good offer for it. Just my thoughts.
