Case 8830 Swather
We have recently acquired a Case 8830, same as Hesston 8200, that some of the glass has fallen out of. We have all but one window which I think we can find still. I have heard that the glass falling out of these is a pretty common issue on these. I want to re-glue these back in place, but am afraid they will fall out again. What would be the best thing to do for these once I have them glued in? I want to try to not do anything ugly. Maybe thinking about making some irons that will line up with the inside window frame that I can drill. If I do this does anyone have a good method to drilling the glass that won’t shatter it? Any other ideas that would be better?

Stupid auto correct. Anyway to fix the title? Should have said Cab glass.

To the forum 70TA455. We are glad that you joined.

Where are you located and what is the lay of your land?

I hate autocorrect also. One of the mods can fix it for you, right Cathrine?

I am in eastern Washington. The land we are on is pretty flat. We run 50-60 acres of alfalfa and are needing to cut our CRP grass. It has been out for a couple years. Had the neighbor cut some of it last year, and he will do the same this year. He did not want to cut all of it so we are planning to use this swather to cut the rest.

If there is a flat edge to glue the glass too, I would just get some butyl rubber. The same stuff that an auto glass shop uses to glue in windshields and I would prep and glue the glass in. It won't come out untill you take it out.

Unfortunately all that I have read this still does not work. I plan to do this, but want to have a better way to make sure it is secured. The butyl will ensure that it is sealed well, but there is no lip to help keep the window in.

Post a picture of opening where the glass goes in the cab.
Should possibly be a rubber seal that goes around the opening and the glass fits in the seal. The glass can't be mounted ridged to the cab or it will crack when the cab flexes.

I discovered that a construction window caulking is virtually the same product but at a very favorable price advantage.
The product is called FLEXTRA* and comes in standard caulking gun tubes.
I have used it with great success whenever I want to 'glue' dissimilar products.

Just be sure to have squeaky clean surfaces.

Since it is flexible it is great for dissimilar materials that have different rates of expansion.(like glass and metal)
It also isolates the glass from vibration and shocks.

Sticking 2 pieces of (metal) and you need a cold chisel to separate them, that's how good an adhesive it is!

* that is one brand, but other urethane caulks do exist.

I also recommend a heavy duty butyl caulk (not silicone). I have used tubes of "through the roof" brand caulk that is super tough when dry.

The glass attaches to a square tube frame. There is no lip or anything for a rubber gasket to slip into. I am told this is one of the big downfalls to this swather. All that holds it on is a butyl rubber type adhesive.

I think I will look into this flextra and see how it works.

Thanks for all the ideas and recommendations.

Buy some thin flat steel 3/4" wide. Weld it around the inside of the square tube frame. Paint it all nicely and glue your windows in!
