My 9 year old amazed me this week by asking santa for a drawer tool chest and wrenches...I was expecting the usual pokemon/transformers/x-box type deal,Needless to say i don't mind spending money on that...hope it continues..???

You would have gotten out allot cheaper with the toys! but in the long run he will be "richer" with the tools. When he's 10 he will probably want a welder...:D Think of all things he can build will the "old man".

See if you can find an old lawnmower in the garbage for him to use his tools on. I loved taking things apart when I was little. Better than him disassembling your tractor!

When i was about 9 years old, my dad rented a two-bay shop to a guy who owned a used car lot. He used it to do prep work on his cars before putting them out on his lot. He also did lots of other projects like taking early/mid '50s Chevy pickups and putting in Caddy V8s and automatic transmissions to use them as tow vehicles for his racing boats.

Where I'm going with this is that he had fantastic tools, but none fascinated me more than his socket speed handles (handcranks). When loosening a nut or bolt, he'd get it loose and then grab the end of the handle and spin it around with one hand to finish loosening the fastener. I was mesmerized by his ability to do that, so a set of speed handles (3/8" and 1/2") with universal sockets were some of the first tools I ever bought for myself when I was about 16. It made me feel like a real mechanic.:)

That's great! I agree that you should give him something to take apart with his new tools. You might want to break the bolts loose and just snug them back up for him so he don't get frustrated trying to turn ones that are stuck.

When my eight year old niece was 6 I gave her a starter set of tools that were on special at the Hardware Store...

There were about a dozen little girls at her party and all they wanted to do was use the tools...

She has taken very good care of them and keeps them under her bed... her Mom and Dad have to ask her to borrow them on occasion...

Each year I add something...

She really wants a cordless drill/driver this year... I told her I would get her one, but the batteries might not last too long...

When ever anything is broken she now says we should try to fix it!
