This past weekend I decided to change the hyd/hst filters on my B7500 since it had reached the magical 50 hr. mark.

The literature and dealer mentioned that when changing the filters I may lose a little fluid so I purchased a gallon of super UDT fluid. Much to my surprise, when I removed one of the filters, I believe it was the hydraulic, right side of tractor when viewed from sitting in seat, I not only lost the fluid in the filter but all the rest of the fluid decided it wanted out also.

Is this normal, or is something amiss with my B7500.

And of course nothing was open late on a sat. afternoon, so I will be making a trip after work today for some more UDT fluid since the one gallon I put back in does'nt even register on the dipstick.

Thanks for any input.

dpm;

I only changed mine once so far on my B7500 - at about 90 hours (I have 120 hours on it now).

I did have alot of oil come out after I pulled the filter off. This was even after I drained the hydro oil from the plug off of the mid PTO shaft.

Just out of curiousity, were you able to get the strainer off too? I couldn't even figure out where it was. I took off what looked like the strainer based on the manual, but I couldn't see the strainer anywhere.

I also had to take the wheel off to get at the filter; wasn't enough clearance with the wheel on.

I just found out from the dealer this morning that the owner manual saying that you will loose a little fluid is rather ambigous. If you are quick with the next filter then you loose a little fluid. However, if you are slow with the other filter, or in my case had the hydrostatic filter handy not the hydraulic filter, then you loose a lot of fluid. Or in my case, the whole reservoir worth.

I did'nt even attempt the strainer. But since, I don't have much fluid in the system it is probably worth looking at.

I have the bar/turf tire settup and am able to remove both filters w/o removing the tires. I'm sure with the tires removed though it is easier to make the transaction of removing the old filter and installing the new.

I guess that was just another first timer lesson. Like the dealer said, good thing it was'nt a big series tractor that had 10 gallons of fluid to spill across my garage floor as opposed to the ~3 gallons of the B7500.

Unfortunately, the manual is rather poor.

I agree with you re: the manual being poor.

I looked over it a number of times and asked many questions here prior to even attempting it. Without the answers that I got here, I probably would still be trying to put the tractor back together.

In terms of the amount of oil coming out of the filter housing, since I was changing the fluid at the same time, I was expecting it, so I was prepared for it.

I have the R-4 tires. If you did remove your tire, I was going to ask you what you used as the jack point on the tractor. I used a Hi-lift on mine and had to use the FEL frame. If I didn't have the FEL frame, I don't know how I would've jacked it up.

I alway drain the fluid before changing filters since I always change them together. Does the manual call for changing filters and NOT fluid?

hayden,
Maybe I can't read, but my manual says change the transmission andfilters at 50, 300 and every 300 hours after. Doesn't say which to do first/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Maybe thats why folks cuss the manual. If I got 3 gallons of oil on the floor I would be looking for something to cuss, usually the dog./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Changed the fluid in my L48 last week and it was a mess. My catch pan only holds a little less than 2 gal. And I drained 14. So I had to keep putting the plug back in to empty it and every time it came shooting out and some missed the pan. Then I couldn't get the HST filter loose, had to use a 24" pipe wrench to break it loose. Between that, the 2 hydraulic filters and the strainer I had at least 3 gal on the floor and me.
Good thing it is winter and I have wood ashes to soak it up.
Next time I will try to get the wheels up on blocks so I have room to drain into 5 gal. Pails. Also need to make a up a fitting with a valve and hose that I can screw in this will let me turn the drains (has 2 ) on and off to change the pail .

Am doing my 50 HR maintence also in my new B7500 and changed fluids and filters. My dealer says to do everything and that is how I translate the manual. It is worth doing the strainer as I found a considerable amount metal filings clinging to it and would recommend that it not be overlooked on any 50 HR maintence. Jethro

The 2910 maintenance schedule calls for changing the trans oil and filter at the same interval, however the procedures for each are described independently giving no indication that there is any interdependency between the procedures. Looks to me like another weak spot in their manuals, which all in all are pretty lame.

The strainer I'm sure is below sea level and would result in quite a mess if it were removed without first draining the trans.

I think the moral of the story is drain fluids, change filters, refill fluids.

My L3410 just hit the 50 hour mark and the dealer picked her up yesterday. I thought about going at it myself but with the volume of fluid and mess I opted to have it done instead. Went with super UDT and with pick up and return it's going to bust two hundred dollars. Seems high till I look at what my time is worth and the mess in my garage instead of theirs. The other good part is I won't be in a foul mood!
