So, I went over to Western States Cat in Spokane and we headed up north to demo the new Supertrak machine. Des Trent, the NW salesman was my contact, and Tom King, the President was there to show the new machine!

First, I ran the ASV 100 for over a half hour and getting a feel for it. A FAE head was mounted on the front. This machine does a nice job of cutting. The cab leaves much to be desired, however, the back up camera is a nice additional feature that was on this model. I was less than impressed with the drive-ability of the machine. It has a hard time doing 'zero' turns, and response from the joystick was often delayed. however, it is a nice machine, but I feel that the price of this machine doesnt equate to the quality. (this is my opinion, im not bashing anyone elses machine, just giving my thoughts).

Then, I was able to wrestle the SK140 from the hands of the others at the demo! This machine had the steel single track grouser, and FAE 2speed head. Just looking at the machine before it moves is impressive. Then you hear it rolling, it sounds like a mini D5 running around out there! Closing the cab, you are behind a 1/2" lexan door with tearoffs (like in nascar) for added visibility, and you can tell the cab is very well sealed. I took my earplugs out while running this machine (how often does that happen?!). Anyway, the 140hp is AMAZING! There is nothing that seems to stop this thing. If you are able to jam up the head, it is up and running in less than 3 seconds. The SK drives like a dream, i was working on 8 foot spacing running circles around 10" diameter trees without issue. It ate whole trees like they were toothpicks. They did an excellent job in the engineering dept and everything is made for operator comfort and ease of service.

I attached a few pics, i cant say enough about the SK 140. at 15K lbs its a little giant, and monsters thru the woods with ease. I would say the production is about 2x that of the ASV and comfort was 10x the ASV.

Very impressive machine. I hope to have one in my arsenal when the time is right for me. If you have questions, please ask away!

Thanks for reading!

Whats the price tag on the Supertak one? I'm guessing $150K. I'll buy a nice Timbco for that $$. Looks like you were up near Colville?

What ASV were you running. Was it one of the new ones?

They use the same C4.4 motor from CAT, just get a bit more hp by flashing it. also, the hydro for the head is running stand alone, makes a huge difference. no stealing power from driving or arm operation.

As for doing the homework. The pres is very involved. In my thoughts they have matched everything up perfectly. all fans are auto reversing in sequence and all servicing is nicely accessible, this one did not have the winch, but they have a hydro winch mounted under the single bar on this machine (they add another rear bar and protectively mount the winch.

Its less than $180K, but not much. Thats for the top of the line model with 2speed specialized FAE head (you can save a few by a lesser head). This one was the top tier model with all the stuffs, a full display of all aspects of operation on the computer, pretty badd ***. you can see your instantaneous fuel consumption and even set up to see an average for the day. full throttle working hard, itll run just under 6gph.

They have several of the previous generation (120HP) for sale with minimal hours on it for about the price of the ASV, and much more capable (in my opinion).

We were actually in Cusick! pretty close. i wish we had soil like you do over here in MT! haha

I was running a brand new ASV purchased earlier this season with several hundred hours on it. This machine had been resealed by a factory rep and resealed again by the guys who operated the machine. Im not saying it was a bad machine, verrry nice, but no comparison to the Supertrak. For the price of the ASV, i would want it a bit better. I understand they are working to correct the cab issues. However, the track system is the biggest difference as i see it. you are running a dozer track on the Sk140, which will not stop for ****. I was put down as i had a stick in the track of the ASV that wouldnt allow it to run. it only took a few seconds to get it out, but that is another advantage to the SK140, noooo worries at all.

It's interesting to an outsider who doesn't brushcut that the ASV PT1oo would even be compared to a dedicated mulching machine that costs close to $180k. I'm not sure but I would think that the ASV with a head would run around $80-85k which means that a guy could buy two of them for the price of one Supertrak. I also noticed that it wasn't the new PT100 forestry that ASV recently released. I think that machine is better suited now for brushcutting with some of the things they've added. I guess it depends on what a guy is really looking for. The Supertrak looks like a neat machine.

What was the air con like ? I wonder if ASV would now consider putting steel tracks on the PT100F ? If they can fit them on the Cat i can see no reason ASV could not . The $180,000 is a big issue for me as that's about $5 million in OZ .:D
