I have an old five foot brush hog that says it is the sunshine line made by" modern????" The thing created a little vibration in it (more than normal). I disconnected it from the tractor and everything seems fine. U-joints o.k. no play in gear box (up and down or side to side ) I have it lifted up so I can get to the blades. They really don't seem bent, just dull. The only real thing I see is that the blades didn't rotate freely on the stump jumper. I can see how this might cause it to vibrate but I'm just guessing. That's why I'm asking you people who have more experience than me. Could this be my problem??? Also, where would I find blades for this shredder because I can't find a site on the internet for modern brush hogs? Thanks for the help.

Welcome new member.
Your profile and bio filled out will help get an answer. Your location and information about the 'Sunshine' unit would help, as well as pic or two. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I can't find a website, but I believe this is the corporation that made your cutter:
Modern Mfg. Co.
Mowing decks, trailers, 3ph implements. P.O. Box 790, Beaumont, TX 77704, (409) 833-2665.

Modern is now part of a larger company but I don't recall the name. The Sunshine line is very old. I have two Sunshine box blades, one of which I know for sure is 20 years old. The phone number given you by KiotiJohn should get you some help.

Let us know what you find out. I have an old Modern rotary cutter that I will be refurbishing soon.

I acquired a 5 foot Sunshine rotary cutter back in the early 70’s, It was well used when I got it, that mower was just too tough.

The area I mowed with it, around 40 acres, was very sandy with lots of hills, Gopher and moles. I did as much leveling with that cutter as I did mowing. The gear box always leaked, seals had long before failed, thought I was going to HAVE to buy a new larger cutter so I just packed a LOT of grease in the gear box. I used that mower hard for 18+ years… Never ever did it fail. I changed ujoints once and blades at least three times. As far as I know it is still mowing. That was a very Heavy Duty machine.

Oh yeah… It did have a little vibration but it never got any better or worse.KennyV.

Welcome to TBN zwitter98; most newbie's first posts (mine included) are questions or requests for help. Yours is extremely helpful. Hopefully the first 97 zwitters are as good. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Hope to read more of yours.

Wow. They make some besutiful stuff. Mowers have galvanized decks. WOnder why we never hear about them. Probably because they are super-expensive.

Wellllll, I've never actually done a lot of pricing so I can't tell you if it's expensive or not. I told my tractor salesman I didn't know anything about tractors and equipment but I wanted something that I couldn't break. He delivered it all Wednesday. The 5' galvanized Competitor was $900. A couple of friends work with the highway department and have seen a lot of brush hogs. They were impressed with the machine.

I think they are competitve on prices. Kubota dealer in Jasper, TX quoted me $695 for a 4' bush hog. The galvanized option is only $55 more.

I'm going to order 1 on Monday since I sold my old bush hog and tractor yesterday.
