I recently got around to installing the 1-1/2" Sunpro mechanical oil pressure gauge on my Yanmar 1700. The needle jumps around from the engine vibration pretty bad. It varies as much as 5psi up and down. The water temp gauge I got from Hoyt does not jump around, although both are listed as mechanical. Has anyone else seen this?

I too bought the water temp gauge from Hoye and it is steady as a rock. Coincidentally, I also installed a Sunpro Oil Pressure Guage (2") as well and yes it jumps around a bit maybe about 5 psi in that size. The Sunpro guages have a cheaper mechanism and does not have a dampening system like the Hoye ones. They were not designed for the vibrating diesel tractors. Of course it is still useful. I just assume the actual reading would probably be half way between the low and high bounce of the needle. I would like to have a quality oil pressure gauge like the temp gauge.

I had auto-meter brand gauges in a drag car that I had. It shook alot more than my yanmar diesel & they didn't move around. Cost more than sun pro brand but very good gauges.

I found this set of sunpro gauges online, it has all 3 gauges and a panel included. I hope the link works.web page

The link just takes you to the web site, I'll try it again. If it doesn't work you can search the site or the gauges and panel set. web page

check this site web page excellent gauges. They also have water/temp/ oil/volts built into 1 so you only cut 1 hole

I'm not an expert so take this for what it's worth, but I think the oil pressure and water temp gauges are working on two totally different principals. That could be why one seems stable and the other bounces around. I think if you had a Sunpro water temp gauge, it would be just as good as the one you have now. As for the oil pressure gauge, does it smooth out at higher RPMs? Just wondering if your oil pressure really is moving up and down 5 psi and the gauge is just showing you what is really going on. If that's the case, I would expect it to smooth out at higher RPMs. I have a set of the 1.5 inch Sunpro gauges on my 2210 and they seem to work fine, no bouncing at all... Hope you get it figured out, keep us posted.

Try adding a restrictor orifice at the end of the connection near the gauge.

Pressure wil read true, but it will dampen the jittery movement.

I have a set of 1 1/2" Sunpro gauges on my 1700, but the oil pressure does not jump around. The only time it fluctuates is when increasing or decreasing engine RPM. I attached a picture of mine installed.
