Hey guys....I've been trying to rid my well of the horrible sulphur smell as to date I have tried the following fixes. I have a h2o softener, whole house filter with carbon filter, I've removed the mag pipe from the softener and pour bleach into the well regularly. I am trying to avoid getting one of those expensive sulphur filters that culligan and some other the other companies sell for 2000 and up. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears.

Thanks

FWIW, down in Florida, they use aerators. It is a big tank with screened vents open to the atmosphere. The hydrogen sulfide gasses off due to the large surface area of the water. The downside is you need a second pump. The well pump fills the aerator and a second pump supplies the water pressure. Limit switches control the filling of the aerator, as I understand it.

Water from my well also has a high sulpher content but you'd never know it at the tap. I have an ozone system from Triple O Systems - Ozone Water Treatment Systems. I thought it would be a bunch of hokum when it was first proposed but it works like a charm.

Mine consists of a small ozone generator in the pump house, a large plastic half burried cistern outside (don't know the exact capacity, but it's big), and a filter and bubbler that hangs in the cistern.

On one side of the cistern is the usual well pump that keeps the cistern full. Between the cistern and the house a pressure tank and a jet pump. So you end up needing an additional pump because the cistern essentially becomes the "well" that you pump out of.

I couldn't be happier with this solution.

I read somewhere that a builup (fungus?) in your hot water heater on the heater element can make the sulphur smell even worse.

you may want to examine and change out the heater element. It may help and it will be a lot cheaper than anything else you can try

If you have not found the earlier posts on this subject.....

I use an aquarium bubbler and a 3.5" chassis fan running 24/7
in my water tank. It easily removes the dissolved H2S gas.
You have to have a no-pressure tank, as mentioned.

Some of my neighbors have worse probs (Mn and Fe) and so use
the Ozonator, like Triple O sells.

BTW, even my NEW electric water heater makes lots of noise and
if I am not keeping up with aeration, the hot water stinks first.

Sweeter,

When we first bought this house we had the same problem. I turned out to be a problem with the expansion tank. It turned out the rubber they used seemed to be the perfect medium for a type of bacteria that produced hydrogen sulfide gas. After some research, we found there was a recall on the tank and it was replaced for free. Problem was solved!!!! It might be something to look into.

Are you sure it's sulfur? The water at my house smells like sulfur to but that's not what it is. I get my water tested on a regular basis and mine alway's shows a high manganese (sp?) level. Smells just like sulfur/rotten eggs. I to have a water softener and it does nothing for the smell. I installed a charcoal water filter on the kitchen sink and it removes it but to install one of those filters on the whole house would mean I would probably have to change the filter cartridge on a weekly basis. The plug up fairly fast.

If you have not had your water tested by a lab yet I would. Make sure your dealing with sulfur before you get to involved in trying to get rid of it.

There is some sort of rod in hot water heaters that can cause a sulpher smell. In my cabin we get this smell only with the hot water and only with the first tankful. After that, no smell. Someone said you could remove this rod, but others say that of you do you will get corrosion?
