Hi Guys

I have MF135 I have the choice of 2 sub-soiler sizes or rippers as we call them.

I have the choice of 24 Inches(630mm) and 30 inches(780mm) Will the MF135 handle the 30 inch depth of these large Chinese mad sub soilers or rippers?

I have a genuine Massey Ferguson single ripper ( MF called it a "South African Subsoiler"), It goes down to 22 inches.
works great in softer ground, but my MF135 Diesel struggles a bit when the ground gets harder
I guess it depends on the ground you are working

You only have 45 hp (engine), 33 hp on the drawbar and around 4000 lb pull on the drawbar per the U. of Nebraska standardized tractor tests. So for a single-shank ripper, I'd look for a parabolic ripper that has less drag when buried 24 or 30" deep in hard soil.

Sub Soiler

Good luck

Thanks John

It will be hard dry clay with lots of rock. I am on a Volcanic plateau of sorts, its generally called "tough soil" to work. Thats why I was concerned that I would not have enough HP to go down
30 inches. The ground is soft clay at the moment because of winter thats why i though i would get into it now before it hardens up and cracks,

I think I will have to play it safe and go with the 24 inch model

Thanks

Thanks for the information. Those "U" shape rippers or sub soilers are only available in large sizes for 60hp and up tractors.

I was thinking more of a ripper with pipe laying attachment.

SINGLE TINE TRACTOR RIPPER 8mm PIPE

Something like the RPL65 with pipe layer. After reading the link that you provided and the information John has provided I think my limited horsepower and clearance height makes the MF135 too small for a 30 inch ripping depth. 24 Inches might even be on the limit.

Thanks for the information.

The length of the shank is more for trash clearance or crop residue than it is depth of subsoiling. I would go with 30".

Not sure about your soil around around here, in deep black Midwest soil, ripping to 12" to 14" is all that's suggested. Deeper than that is said to cause soil "inversion" and it's said does more harm than good. I have 33" shanks and rip to 14" deep.

Thanks, I will have a good chat with the dealer on Monday. I will just check that if I have enough clearance with the hitch raised to handle the 30 inch depth ripper.

What concerns me is that my MF135 is easily stopped by one lousy small rock when using the box grader when one of its shanks hits a small rock.

I will report back on how the MF135 handles the 30 inch ripper.

Thanks

That's another matter if you don't have enough clearance. Usually you just adjust your lift arms to, in effect, raise the implement by shortening the lift arms. Some implements are made with two sets of lift pins, too. One is lower that the other and that, again, raises the implement. Any pictures?

I just measured the clearance of my lift arms at maximum height its just about 1300mm about 51 inches

The 30 inch ripper has one set of lift pins and its total height is 1320mm, which will leave very little travel clearance height.
