I'm not sure anything can be done about this but sometimes a member chooses a title for his post that is appropriate, but the discussion ends up going down a different path, sometimes not much related to the original topic. This would not be an issue except sometimes the new topic that crops up is one that would be of interest to a lot or TBN'ers.
For instance, I recently entered a post in the Kuboa Operating forum asking if anyone sharpened their MMM without removing the blades. Most responders gave me the answer I was afraid of - - take 'em off dummy & do it right. No problem.
Then DanR67 pointed out an older thread that I completely missed that pointed out how common it is to find MMM spindles 'grease starved'. I did not open that thread because the Subject Title was something about a burned out bearing - - something I was sure did not apply to me. Wrong! If there were any indication that there was a problem with lubrication of mower spindles, I would have read the post the 1st time.

As I said, I'm not sure anything can be done. I would require that someone step in & ask that a new thread be started to address the new topic.

Just my $0.02.

I guess I'm not sure exactly what it is that you're asking. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you're wondering about being able to change the title of a thread once it's been posted, we can't do that. Actually at one time it was possible to change a threads title, but when someone would do that, it became so confusing, since people were looking for the original title, that the feature was finally disabled.

As for someone stepping in and ask that a new thread be started on the new topic, well, anyone can do that simply by posting that request in the existing thread, or by starting their own new thread about the new topic.

Does this answer your question? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the reply. I said I did not know what could be done - - probably nothing. Changing the topic of a thread is definitely not the answer.

Yeah, anyone could suggest a new thread be started, but sometimes you never know where a discussion is headed till it is well down the road. That's one of the reasons TBN is so entertaining.

In my example, I was only looking for confirmation that it was OK to be lazy & sharpen your blades while they are still on the MMM. What I learned was 'don't do that', plus a lot more about spindle lubrication. If I were surfing TBN & did not think I needed a lesson in MMM blade sharpening, I might have skipped the more important message of the thread.

thanks,

Jack

Personally, I'd like to see the titles "Help" and "Please help" and "Question" and "Problem" all dissallowed. They seem to show up all the time and are pretty much useless titles. Regrettably, there's no way to assure good titles, though I suppose pointing the uselessness of the title to the poster would help, but I don't want to irritate any one, especially someone new to the board.

So how was that for doing exactly what this thread was complaining about.

Ain't irony great!

(And no, I'm not asking for anything, although searching only on thread titles would be nice -- oohh there's that irony again.)

Sometimes it is hard to beat google and their indexing technology. The google searches are sometimes more thorough in the hits than the sites built in seach mechanisms.

Use this syntax on google using your grease and spindles keywords for example:

grease spindles site:www.tractorbynet.com

That will limit googles search to TBN using the 2 keywords.
