I am starting this thread to see what the stuipdest welding question is. The stupidest one I have heard is "If I hook gas up to my mig welder, can I use it as a cutting torch".

I had a guy ask which end of the stick electrode goes in the stinger. he said he could make a case for either end.

Asking stupid questions without being belittled is one of the primary functions of this forum. I would prefer that folks are comfortable asking questions, rather than being hesitant and maybe injuring themselves and others.

I have nothing against stupid questions, I ask them all the time. This thread is not to offend or hurt people on tbn, just to see what kind of questions about welding people have heard. I heard the mig welder as a cutting torch question at princess auto, and I was laughing so hard, I just had to see what kind of stupid welding questions there are out there.

If I could remember them, I would post stupid welding questions I have asked.

Since I sell them, I have a bunch of ones that take me back..but again, we all got to learn somehow right?. Guy who bought a TIG welder called in to say it wouldn't work properly... I asked him what kind of tungsten he was using. He said "What's Tungsten?" The other day a guy bought a TIG/Stick unit, and asked on our forum why there were two ground clamps included, one insulated and the other regular. And my favorite, a guy called to tell me his TIG wasn't working...after about 30 minutes of diagnosis, all things were check...But he said well, why, if its working, won't it just fire off in the air?

90% of the questions are answered by reading the book.

I wonder if the guy that asked the question - kind of understood the concept of a mig welder and a plasma cutter, without knowing the real difference between them?

He may have also asked in hopes of getting an explanation without being sure what the right question should be.

As has been said by others, we've all asked 'em...we just can't remember 'em. My question is 'was he blond'. There, that should offend 17% of the population. :D
