600 ford
i have a 600 ford , my worm gear broke , so i tryed to replaced it ( keep im mind i said tryed lol) i put new bearings/ races, and seals, first thing i noticed is that my new seals didn't hold because i stepped in a big puddle of gear oil yuck , then i thought i'll just put the thing on my tractor so i can steer the tractor out of the way, to clean up more , got it on turned the steering wheel ,it moved up and down , now im lost i didn't think the wheel should move, does any one have any idea what i did wrong? i think i have read that these boxes where easy to rebuild . help

steering box is super simple...just had mine out and apart recently.

If I recall correctly, when the upper thrust bearing is installed, that is what keeps the shaft from "moving up".

I am stumped...

The only thing I can think of is something is wrong with the upper bearing/race. I know when I put mine back together, it slightly "bound" up and had to wiggle things around a bit to get everything seated. Dumb question, but is the top cover bolted down tight?

in top cover your talking about the part where the steering column is ? today i took the column off and i found another crushed bearing, so i put one of the nylon things in , after i put the box back togther i was checking to see if the shaft moves up and down , then all of a sudden when i was turning my steering wheel to the right my box locked up ,i also found that i have abad sector gear , so now im wondering if i should spend more money on this box or f ind a used one .

Yes, the top cover is the piece with 4 bolts that bolts to the top of the steering gear box. If you are missing the top bearing, this would be your problem. I would not put one of those nylon ones in, but order the proper ones metal ones with big needle bearings. If the top bearing was toast, then probably some of the needles got down in to the "works" jamming it up.

I am totally confused, as you said you put new bearings and races in. Did you only do the lower bearing and not the top? It would have been obvious when you had the box apart the top bearing was missing.

Pull the box apart, get the pitman arms off the sector shafts and take the sector shafts out. Clean all the old bearing out of there. How do you know you have a bad shaft? Missing teeth? Find the right PN (left or right) on the Case New Holland web site and then go to Tractor-Part, Find Tractor Parts to find a used shaft. Just did this myself when the top bearing got in the gears and broke a few teeth. Have a new gear on the way and will just slide it in when I get it.

then yes i did have the top bolted tight , i put both top and bottom in new , i don't like to do things half way , the reason i'm calling my sector shaft bad is the way my pitment arms fit , when i got the tractor the pitment arm on the left was lose it was so bad my front wheels would wobel ,not knowing i bought a used pitt ment arm , it tightened up some , but not like the one one the right did , the seal leaked on the left side of my box so i'm thinking the saft is worn out , i al so had to replace the top , i bought a used one so now i,m doubting that part , i pulled the top off to try and see if the bearing was broken, it was i happened to have a nylon thing so i put it in i wasn't planing on leaving it in but it was the only thing i had to check to see if the movement could be stoped , i even left the shims out also still moved up and down,

Something is way wrong with your box. Consult a manual or parts diagram to continue...

i am going to buy one used , or rebuilt, i have spent enough money on this box , i fought with a fuel leak most of the winter , i can't afford to buy parts that don't work , and from what i have found aftermarket parts don't , the local dealer only stocks a few o. e. m. parts. so i have been getting my parts off ebay ,

here's my guess.

your top bearing died. you repalced it, then put hte same number of shims back on it.. and either had too much preload and crushed the bearing.. and it dropped rollers that lodged int eh sector gears.. or you had slop on the bearing a nd it allowed it to crush on up travel of the worm.

same result.

hard to damage them sectors.

lets see it....

and yes. they are easy to rebuild.

if the sector diameters are worn or scored.. new seals have to be doubled up ( thin ones ). moved.. or shafts sleeved or otherwise built up and machined. orings onthe covers have to be replaced too.

lastly. there are some pretty chitty chinese bearings out there. i have bought some that had the cage at the wrong angle and they crushed during CORRECT instalation.

the nylon inserts are total junk... i'd go without steering before using them...
