So it all started with small hydraulic leak on my Terramite... on one of the hoses to the swing cylinder on the backhoe. It was just starting to get bad enough to leave a puddle, so looked over the machine and ordered about 5 hoses that were looking kind of rough.

When the hoses came in, I realized that there was no way to get to the hose fitting on the swing cylinders with out sliding them about 6 inches toward the rear of the machine where there was an access hole in the floor. Simple... knock out 4 pins and slide the cylinders out the back of the machine and replace the hoses. As always the first 3 pins come out with no issue.

Then we get to number 4. The frame end of the swing cylinder under the floor, against the hydraulic tank, between the seat and the rear axel. It would not budge

I Tried PB plaster, Free-All, I tried the gas wrench ( acetylene torch) and all I could get it to do was spin about 10 degrees back and forth with a big hammer. I finally broke out the porto-power, but all that did was bend the retainer strap. This pin was not moving. The problem was: the pin had to come out the top, and although I could see the bottom of the pin it was directly on top of the rear axel tube, with only about an inch or inch and half of clearance. No room to swing a hammer or get anything in there to push. Either get it out from the top or take the whole rear drive train out for access to the bottom.

So I decided I would give it my best shot from the top side. I did some google research and formulated my plan.....

First welded a 3/4 in nut to the top of the strap...

Then I put my impact gun n the nut and worked it back and forth about a dozen times.

Then I used a piece of all thread and heavy wall pipe to make an improvised slide hammer of sorts.

I had to go back and forth between the Impact Gun and the slide hammer several times. And I actually knocked the nut off twice and had to weld a new one on. (I was not beveling the nut and purposely welding more on the nut than the pin, because I was hoping to grind the nut off and reuse the pin when done.

Making some progress...

It took about 4 hours of on and off work over two nights, but I was smarter and tougher than the steel in the end. I hope this thread will help somebody else out, or give them some ideas for similar situation.

Excellent. Nice work. Thanks for sharing that. I love when innovation wins.

Well done. I have a post somewhere doing similar but also melted some beeswax in the pin.
