Had a stray dog come to our house this morning. Has a flea collar, but no ID or tags. I gave him a little attention and then left until after lunch. When I came home, he was still here.

Called a neighbor to see if she knew anything about the dog. She said she forst saw it about a week ago when it was getting into her garbage. She did not see him again until yesterday. She said he was noticably thinner than last week.

I broke down and fed him when I noticed his ribs were showing. I know, big mistake. But, I can't stand to see a hungry dog. He's curled up in my garage now. I guess we'll see if we can locate an owner. If not, then off to the vet for a neuter job, check-up and I guess we'll adopt him. I need to see how he does with my 2 ****zus. My familty has been out of town all weekend so they just got to meet "Buddy" a few minutes ago. Kids want to keep him, wife and I would rather not. But neither of us would want to turn him over to animal control.

If he's still around tomorrow, I'll try to get a picture of "Buddy".

He might have a micro chip embedded in his shoulder. The animal shelter or veterinarian can check for the chip and locate the owner if he has one. I know how you feel about feeding him. No one should go hungry, be it a dog, cat or human, if we have it in our power to help. As much as you would like to help this dog, I am certain that if he is lost, his owners would also like to have him back. If they didn't care about him, he wouldn't even have a flea collar. Try calling a few of the animal shelters, veterinarians, etc. and see if anyone has a report of a missing dog. Sometimes they travel long distances and never make it home. I am please to know that you are providing him nourishment and shelter in the mean time.

If you have named him already, he will be around... :)

This is a good deed. I sincerely hope he fits into your family.

i hope he gets along with you other dogs. you should also contact the local pound and also the local humane society to see if they've heard of anyone looking for him.

Once you have fed a "Stray dog/cat" they are yours!:D

We have fed several cats in the past. One dissapeared to roving dogs, the other is still with us after about 14 years. He's even moved across Canada.

The roving dogs dissapeared??

BTDT, and when the good for nothing owners show up and say how much they missed there dog and how much the kids love it and why should he have a license cause hes "always" inside, put the bill for the vet, collar, chain, food, dishes, flea dip etc in their face b4 they touch the dog.

Funny, that seems to happen here too.....;)

Definitely get the dog scanned (any vet or clinic should have a chip reader), as he may well have slipped his collar....there is a tag that goes on the collar indicating that the animal has a microchip. I concur that the flea collar means someone was looking after him.

Wow, you don't even allow for the possibility that the dog slipped it's collar somewhere on a fence or shrubbery? Just because the dog is loose and lost doesn't guarantee that the owners are "good for nothing." I have also known of a situation where [put your own word here....I use "punk"] kids removed a collar from a dog and turned it loose because they were ticked off at the owner. Lots of possibilities here beyond just irresponsible owners.

I am a mean SOB when it comes to the topic of irresponsible pet owners, irresponsible parents and individuals. More likely than not these people always let their dog have the roam of the land or an inadequate retention system that "whatever we do, he just keeps breaking the chain" or "dogs were meant to be free" or "dont stick your hand thru the fence (that is right next to the sidewalk) or he'll bite you"
