My 2516 is getting booted out of the semi heated garage, in favor of my wife's car...it's okay as long as I make sure I store it properly in the weather.

So I am asking for tips. I want to cover it, but will a tarp be enough?

I will be adding diesel additive to prevent gelling, but any other advice?

Thanks in advance!

When I first read the thread title my first thought was..... "wife"

My 2216 has always had a tarp over it using spring clamps to fasten it and now diesel additive after it gelled up recently. Pretty much that's all.

Applying a tarp directly over the tractor is likely to cause a lot of condensation, and if there are winds which can cause the tarp to chafe the body, paint could be scratched. In addition you will be supplying a cozy spot for rodents to overwinter. Instead, consider a temporary shelter with a framework to keep the tarp from direct contact with the tractor. Better yet, move to a warm climate. :)

Haven't had any of those problems for the 3 years the tractor has been under the tarp. The tarp is loose enough and rides pretty high that air flow doesn't allow condensation to build up. Haven't noticed any paint chafing and it does get windy. I've had rodents under the hoods my cars, but not the tractor (not sure why that is).

After the last week or so of cold weather, moving south seems like a good option. :)

Keeping the sunlight off the tractor would be my main reason for a shelter of some type.

Sticking together a free standing or lean-to type shed would be my 2 cents; perhaps an 8'X16' will a metal roof.

You would only have to enclose the roof and two sides (form an "L") to keep the sunlight and most of the weather off.

25 pounds per square foot snow load:

3 each 4"X4"X10' PT to 4.0
3 each 4"X4"X12' PT to 4.0
6 each 2"X4"X8' GDF (Green Douglas fir)
8 each 2"X4"X10' GDF (rafters)
3 each 2"X4"X16' GDF
4 each 2"X6"X8' GDF load beams (L&R side) on both sides of 4X4s
4 each 2"X6"X16' GDF load beams (F&Back) on both sides of 4X4s
9 each 24"X10' sections of galvanized roofing (6" O/H on each side)
6 each 4'X8' sheets of 5/8" plywood
16 hurricane ties & enough tie-nails
a couple extra 2X4s for blocking between the rafters, knee and cross braces
roofing screws with washers
nails
a gallon of cheap paint
I like gravel (with uplift blocks) instead of concrete to set the posts.
Perhaps gravel for the flooring
Slope the roof 2' in 10' so the snow and debris slides off

Hope this helps.

I keep my Mahindra in one of those garage in a box tents from TSC. It,s pretty ugly, you probably wouldn't want it in suburbia.but it does the job.

Mine is outside under a small tarp that covers the seat and controls. The tarp is small enough that it leaves a gap over the floor boards giving good circulation to prevent condensation. It's pretty well protected from wind and sun where i park it, so I'm hoping i don't see any of the ill effects that members are saying the tarps can cause. Hopefully this time next year it will be in a pole barn of some type.

I have my tractors parked under an open on 2- 3 sides shed. Never any problems with rodents or weather. One of the sheds is open to the north and west and the other is open on E/W/S. Only problem I have ever had, other than wasps building in the ceiling, is sparrows nesting above the tractor and crapping on it, so I destroy any nest I find. The orientation would likely be better if I only had south opening so it would block all the north wind and evening sun but it is what it is so the tractors will just have to tolerate a bit of 3 pm till dark sunlight in the summer.

One of the portable carports for $900 would be my choice if I had nothing else to put my tractors under and for a bit extra could be made enclosed on 3 sides easily enough with just a bit more sheet metal.

Pictures are worth a 1000 words.....

First clamp the tarp to two sides at the back of the tractor and then pull it tight forward and clamp to the FEL cylinders. I think this is an 8x10 tarp. Protects from rain, snow, and sun and allows air to circulate below.
