Does anybody know if chicken wire will stop a snowmobile if it gets caught up in the tracks. Just looking to detain them till i can call the sheriff. Also heard if you lay white nylon rope in the snow it gets tangled in the tracks kinda like chaps do when your chainsawing, Any suggestions will kindly be appreciated, yeah I have already thought of the other stuff, bullets are too expensive.

I would not personally do that for possiblilty of injuring some one. Round bales work extremely well at blocking entrances!

Me neither, just want to stop them for the sheriff, where the wire would be they have to really slow down to navigate the berm. this is going to be in the snow, not seeking to decapitate them, just destroy their machines

I think you are going about it wrong. If you are having problem with snowmobiles on your land and its posted, you need to have cameras. Its the best evidence, not detaining them. Did you even contact the local snowmobile club to see if they have a trail near you? If so they can try to take steps to deter the few bad apples from straying. DO NOT ATTEMPT to find ways to stop their snowmobiles- all you will get is grief and fights and lawsuits. If they see a barrier and really want to ride on your land, they will find a way. period.
GET CAMERAS AND send to sherriffs . Chances are thier snowmobile is registered and you have a record of who owns it.

I agree. A well placed trail camera will do wonders...

Property is along the Rum River Minnesota and its like a freeway, had the sheriff out and he said i could put up any barriers as long long as i did not endanger human, machines are a complete different matter. And yes I already tried the snowmobile clubs, waste of time. Going to the Head Sheriff to confirm everything the Deputy said. Also meeting with County commisioners to see if they can help with increased Sheriff patrols on snowmobiles, just the one day that the deputy was stopping the snowmobiles made a difference. The people that cause the trouble are mostly cowards hiding behind speed and agility of their machines and helmets that block their faces. Its unfortunate that as usual a few ruin it for many, but what do you do. Stopped one guy riding on posted park property, his reply is that he did not know it was park property ... Duh.... all land land is owned by someone, if you don't know who's it is, you don't go there. Period

They would steal the cameras

DO NOT PLACE ANYTHING TO STOP OR DETAIN THEM. If you do make sure it is clearly marked. Sheriff said you could place obstacles that can damage the machine as long as you do not hurt anyone, would not trust that. If the moving machine is damaged the rider could be too.
Any injury that they may incur may very well be construed as premeditated, especially if you hide the wire . You state you are trying to stop the sleds ,there is the premeditation. What happens when the track locks up at 50mph and the rider get tossed. It doesn't matter if you are not trying to hurt anybody and just want them to stop riding in your fields. Any hidden obstacle not clearly marked with the intent to physically halt or cause damage will get you in trouble. You are trying to damage the sled and stop it where it sits. My neighbor was sued and lost for an unmarked obstacle he placed on his property to stop sleds from coming in and it had nothing to do with a wire across the trail. His homeowners ended up paying out for a totaled machine.
Just trying to keep you out of a bad situation man.
Take the advice above snap a picture or a video, all sleds have registration #'s easy as that.

agreed they will file law suits, best to take some photos then file a law suit for noise pollution and trespassing. Snowmobile riders are an ignorant group some are OK but most think they can ride any where they please.

How big of an area are you trying to block off? 20' wide? 50' wide? 100' wide?
If its up to 20' wide, I would take pallets and paint them white and florescent orange (or some other florscent color).
Here is a diagram of how I would do it. ~2' between the pallets and make them at least 2 pallets high.
PalletBlockade.png
Color key:
Green = Vertical 2x4s to hold the two pallets together
Red = 2x4 Braces to hold the pallets up
Blue = Horizontal 2x4 braces to lock multiple uprights together
Orange/White = Pallet

I would also put no-trespassing signs on the pallets and a game camera to catch people who try to mess with them.

Cut a tree and drag it across trail branches and all.
