Not anything to loose sleep over but I have a thought provoking question. My grandpappy taught me to never buy fuel right after or during the time the tank is getting filled. Always wait and let the shat settle to the bottom he would say. Well what about in a truck or at tractor? I (right or wrong) leave my f250 diesel running most of the time when I am filling it up. so theoreticaly I am stirring up any and all sediment and pulling it into my filters. Anybody have any thoughts or comments?? just one of those things that makes me wonder. LOL

That's what fuel filters are for. Since tractors are not known for a smooth ride... the sediment will be stirred up any way.

Man, you have some free time. I would not worry about it. My uncle owns a gas station and I can tell you from looking over his set up nothing is getting though those filters. Just a old time myth that has not died. Like TEG said that is why they put filters in these things.

after draining the fuel filter/water seperator on my truck twice in two weeks I thought I would ask. I bought fuel at a different station a few weeks ago and even though that is long gone. I seem to be having longer starts and the water in fuel light has been coming on way more often then it did. first time there was a hole in the darn drain cup so I dont know how good fuel was 2nd time I got some water and trash out before it flowed clean diesel.

firemanpat,
Your grandpappy was correct and most probably learned the hard way. It was a matter of fact and not a myth many years ago in this country and as a commercial pilot flying internationally (now retired) I’ve found that you can still get contaminated fuel all over the world.

Today in this country most fuel is well filtered at the service station before it goes into your tank but you can still pick up a slug of water, especially with diesel fuel as with jet fuel. If you find a service station pump that doesn't have full pressure the filters are probably in need of changing as they can get clogged when not regularly serviced.
