in a emergecy if you need to stick weld and all you have is a mig welder all you need is to undo the wire tension clamp trigger on remove nozzle clamp stick cable to the defuser or tip when you turn on machine the stick will be ready to stick weld be careful not to stick the eletrode the worst problem is there is no high freq. to help start the electrode . i use it when cast welding

Huh? Hi Freq start? On stick? No machines I know of start stick with HF. A CV machine doing stick? The process seems incompatible...but it might get you by...but weld won't be quality.

Call me crazy, but I thought MIG was constant-voltage, whereas stick is constant-amperage. I mean, you can weld with a 12-volt battery if you really want to, but I can't see how the welds you'd produce using stick on a MIG machine would be worth a darn.

I think I follow your method.? You have no control with arc length because of cv, so does it strain your machine with starts? Does it load up like pushing duty cycle on smaller machine? How is the quality? Thanks for sharing.

>MacGyver destroyed Murdoc's flamethrower by building an arc welder using a car battery (12 V), jumper cables and a radio antenna.

>In order to fix a piston con-rod for a water pump, MacGyver makes an arc welder out of a generator, some jumper cables, and two half dollars, by running the DC current through the coins to create heat and electrical discharge, with which he can weld the con-rod.

That is genius, forgot to set voltage dial?

It's easy to make a mig machine into a scratch start Tig welder. But with stick you may be better off to run a short cable fron the + post to a Tig power block and get your power from there instead of clamping onto the diffuser. For Tig, You put a jumper accross the trigger wires. ( closes contactor ) put negative wire from the machine to the possitive post ( like reversing polarity ) hook a 1' cable to the negative post on the machine and bolt it to a 105Z57 power block. ( looks like a trumpet ) cable bolts to the middle, Gas hose goes to the regulator and the tig torch with gas valve screws into the other end of the block. ( tape it up well ) Turn wire speed to zero because it will run continuous. turn the voltage knob down below 100 amps to start. You are now set up to scratch start Steel, Silicon Bronze, Moly, Stainless or 312 Stainless for Cast. I used to sell a lot of Lincoln SP100 and 125 115v units for tig at a large dairy. Kinda cool..
