- JD2555 and a few Allis Chalmers and now one Kubota
Years ago I purchased a used 525, used it for several years, with good results. Changed out the hydraulic suction line and called Steiner to confirm if I needed to prime the hose in any way. They said they didn't... well I should have. Huge squeal and lost part of the pump capabilities before it picked up fluid. I dropped the trans-axles to the low gear and kept on using it. Then one day the diesel engine decided to start blowing smoke, at times, was diagnosed as an injector. Not having the funds to send it out and knowing dang little about them, I parked it and started using an Allis Chalmers with a belly mower.
So...about three years later, I am considering how to dispose of the Steiner...
I have two 72" decks, one I know has a stripped key on one of the spindles. Shouldn't be too big a deal for a shop to remake a keyway. Worse case, a spindle is in order. I have the leaf blower hooked to it right now, and in the garage is a shop built 10K generator that was built using a Steiner one as a pattern. I have never used the generator, bought it and stuck it in a vacant hole in the garage. I have four rear weights that go on the back of it. The place I bought it from had two 525's and they parted one out. I have the drive motors from the second one on a shelf in the garage somewhere.
I have no ideal what to value this total package as, or even if anyone would be interested in it. Since some of the parts are of value and some not so, I might have to "pretty" the good ones up and sell them on eBay or Craigslist. I thought I would mention this here and see what your opinions are of how best to dispose the items.
As a side item, I also traded for a later model diesel in another one of the companies parts mowers, but never got it to run. According to my inside sources, that parts mower was kept for the engine, the other which I missed out on, was a running machine that the motor was getting tired in, so they knew they needed a motor soon. If someone is considering a retro, it might be a decent candidate. The Steiner has a 904 in it and the Jacobsen was a 527 or something like that. Have to double check that one.
Any advice or suggestions would be in appreciated.
