All- Any idea why when I had my steering cylinder rebuilt on my farm pro that I no longer have steering? Could there be an air bubble in the line that does not allow me to steer? I took the steering diverted off the tractor took it apart and it does not appear to be plugged up.

Thanks for any help that someone can give.

It is the 200 series and yes, I did make sure that the fluid was topped off. I was not sure if the steering diverter (at the bottom of the steering column) could go bad. I thought that it might be plugged up fro the seals that were ripped/torn in the steering cylinder.

Yep, what Tommy said. Pull a cylinder line and put it in a bucket and see if you get any flow while turning the steering wheel...

It's fairly common for the nut which holds the steering piston to come loose at which point the piston moves but doesn't do anything.

Thanks all for the information. I will try these ideas and with any luck, I will have use of my tractor again.

I have tries to bleed the lines but and they have plenty of fluid going to them. I have no pressure going to the steering cylinder, and I am not sure if the priority valve has an issue or the steering valve (the one that the steering wheel attaches to) may be plugged. Any idea what pressures the lines going to the steering cylinder need to be at?

The steering system consists of three major components -- the cylinder, which moves the front wheels back and forth. It's double-acting, it has two hoses going to it, if one hose has more pressure than the other it will move toward the one with lower pressure. The steering valve, which is really a pump -- spin the wheel one way and it pumps one way, and spin the other and it pumps the other. The diverter valve, which detects if one of the hoses has a higher pressure (from the steering wheel being spun) and supplies fluid at pressure to that side and takes it away from the other, providing the power assist.

Here's what I see as the diagnostic point: the steering should work without the power assist. If you spin the steering wheel with the engine off and the front wheels don't move then something is amiss. It could be the cylinder bypassing, it could be the steering valve isn't moving fluid, or it could be the diverter valve is leaking into the rest of the hydraulic system.

If you're getting zero steering at all this isn't a subtle problem, so you can do some testing with the engine off. If you disconnect one hose from the steering cylinder and spin the steering wheel you can see if the steering valve is working at all. If you spin toward the disconnected hose you should get a stream of fluid out of it. If you spin away from the disconnected hose you shouldn't get any fluid out of the cylinder unless it moves. If the cylinder produces fluid without moving then it's bypassing. If spinning the wheel doesn't produce any fluid then the steering valve isn't working.

I wouldn't suspect air, it should be self-bleeding and all of the components are below the tank. But everything I know is self-taught...

I have a pressure gauge on my main line where it enters the loader valve. It shows overall system pressure and I have seen pressures around 500 PSI when loading the steering system...

To answer your direct question, there is no such thing as "working pressure" in this hydraulic system. The pump moves a fixed volume of fluid with each rotation. If there is no work to be done the fluid moves through the system and back to the tank unimpeded, the pressure is virtually zero. If a valve is actuated it creates resistance to the flow of fluid and the pump increases the pressure to maintain the constant flow. When the steering isn't being turned the pressure should be zero. On my tractor, if I turn the steering against the stop the pressure relieve hisses at me, which I think is 2000 PSI. Depending on what you're asking of the steering the pressure will be somewhere in between.

While the tractor is running, with assistance from another person, the front wheels will turn. I am not sure if there is something that is plugging the, what I would call the diverter at the base of the steering column. We were able to turn the front wheels without turning the steering wheel so I know that something is bypassing. I just hate to start replacing parts when they may not be bad. I had the steering cylinder professionally rebuilt so that is not the problem. Both the loader and the 3 point hydraulics function correctly so I am down to two parts and winter is coming. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info, I will put a gauge in line and check working pressures.

I don't understand. 3 people have suggested that you disconnect a hose and perform various tasks. I don't see your response to those 'tests'. Did I miss those results?

I have not had time to complete the tests. I did talk to the guys at Circle G Tractors and they were helpful in figuring out the problem though.
