I was clearing snow today and noticed an oil drip. I immediately searched for the source of the leak. The steering cylinder on the right side has a bent shaft. There was oil dripping from the end of the cylinder. This probably happened in the woods running into a stump. It looks like it will need a total replacement.
Has anyone replaced one of these cylinders? Could it be rebuilt? Not even sure if you can order this part (s).

Since my original post a friend got back to be and suggested a rebuild. The Cylinder piston assembly is almost $800 where as a rebuild kit and new piston is $200. Does that sound right?

I had dealer rebuild my cylinder a couple of years ago. It was leaking and the shaft was not bent. I think it was around $180.00. I am not sure if a replacement shaft can be purchased from New Holland or not.

Messick's shows the whole assembly for $798 and the rod with bushing #3 for $438. The seal kit #5 is $66. If that is all you need you come out ahead fixing it but if you need kit #4 that's $323 so the whole assembly is a better price. I would pull it apart, see what is causing the leak, and go from there.

I've been going back and forth with the dealer. Took the tractor serial # in and some paperwork.. Now he says there should be a tag on the axle. There is a parts number on the axle but no tag. We have to determine if the parts are available. Apparently older models no longer have parts. This looks like its is going to be expensive.
Any suggestions?

Find a local hydraulic repair shop and take it to them. Probably less than 200 bucks for parts and labor. Many dealers send cylinder rebuilds out to a local hydraulic shop.

Exactly. Banged the cylinder on my 2120 a few years ago. I stuck a piece of wood between the cylinder and front axle and turned the wheel to get it "eye" straight. It leaked for a couple years till I finally took it to a hydraulic shop and the bill was around $200. I think they welded a new rod on. It was a couple years ago.

I noticed the steering cylinder on my John Deere 4410 was bent. It wasn't leaking so I was fortunate that way. I eyeballed where it was bent and straightened it with a piece of wood over the shaft to protect/spread out the force on the shaft and a long bar. This was several years ago and so far no external leaks.

Maybe you can do the same thing and if your lucky the leak will stop.
