Does anybody have (and is willing to share) the rebuilding instructions for the steering gearbox? My neighbor took his apart for rebuild and has the new kit but no instructions. Pictures would be nice.

Thanks. It is not quite the same but I think it will work.

The 1510 steering box is extremely similar to the video. I ended up needing one of these to get the lower bearing out: Blind Hole Bearing Puller

I used a procedure Kernopelli suggested: I welded a bead around the inner face of that bearing where the balls run. Upon cooling the bearing fell right out. You might even weld a 'handle' onto that bearing to get ahold of it since there's no way to get a hook behind it.

But in summary, trying to rebuild my YM186D steering box I found such a trashed nightmare that I gave up and bought a rebuilt box from Hoye. I win more times gambling on old equipment than not, but this was one of those cases where all I could do to get the thing back in service was pay what it cost to do it right.

Kub0 here's a thread I posted about my YM186D steering box rebuild project. YM186D is simply the US version of your neighbor's YM1510D and the steering box is identical. The thread has lots of my questions then some points that might help you. For example how to get the shifter out of the cowl, and Kernopelli's tip about welding.

Thanks guys. We fixed it. The steering box is essentially the same as the instructions except for where the steering column attaches to the steering box. This one had a threaded adapter with a lock nut. We didn't have or need any shims with that setup. The tractor was purchased from another neighbor that buys and rebuilds equipment. There were enough loose balls in the case for several bearings so we know the last rebuild was not done properly.
Lesson #1 - Be careful who you buy from.
Lesson #2 - Make sure you follow the instructions and clean out all the junk in the box.

I may have been unfair to the person that he bought it from. We rebuilt the steering box twice. The ball bearings break in half. The loader may have been too much for the tractor. The tractor had to be moving to steer and it was a job even then. He found a Kubota dealer that took it in trade on a new B2620 with loader.
