Steel Teeth

I've got a tree/post puller almost fabricated for use on a Toolcat (standard Bobcat attachment). Basically it's a hydraulic pincher attached to the loader. The pincher arms are 2" square steel. I was planning on welding steel teeth on the inside of the pincher arms to grip the tree or post. Problem is, I am not sure where I can buy that and have not figured out how to make them with the tools I have.

Any ideas on what I could use to give the pinchers some biting ability?

I have several used framing-hammer heads, and I was thinking about using the claw ends for hardened teeth.

You might find some of these at a used tool store.

Has anyone else tried this?

You could go to TSC and buy 2 or 3 lbs of grade 8 bolts.Weld em on and grind to a point.Railroad spikes might work too.

I was thinking more along the lines of bar stock with teeth cut out. Seems like that would be easier to weld to the pincher arms and since it would be a single piece would hold up better than individually weld pieces.

Draw what you want and take or send it to a shop that can plasma cut it from about 1/2" steel. They may also offer beveling, which would effectively sharpen them more yet.

Jim,

That was going to be my next step until my brother stopped by and looked at it. He suggested welding a piece of angle iron underneath of the pincher arms with one edge sticking out to the side that would catch the tree/post to provide the bite I am looking for. I'm going to investigate that a little. I could even notch the edge that sticks out with a grinder to give it more bite.

If you weld the angle iron aon a upward angle and sharpend one edge it would give you a good bite. Also by it being a long single piece, trees or poles that are smaller can not get between the teeth.

Welding it on with the edge pointing upwards was exactly how he suggested. That way the harder you pull the more it digs in.

You also made a good point about it being a single long piece. Some of the trees I will be pulling are 2-3" diameter but some are smaller and I wouild like to to work for all sizes (within reason).

Sometimes you just need more brains working and eyes looking to come up with a solution.
