Hi.

I have a JCB TD10 Skid dumper, with a 13Hp Honda engine.
I have just replaced the starter, since the last one burned up. (Bought the machine used, nut the starter didnt look old)

It still were quite slow on the starter, so I changed the battery. I tried a new 21Ah battery, but it was even slower than the old battery.
Then I replaced the new battery with a proper 62Ah battery. Stil turns ower to slow.

I`ve tried with massive cables, so its not the cables/ground thats the fault.
I have to hock it up to a charger, and let it build it up to 14,5-15V before it turns the starter enough to start it.

I can also mention its quite hard to pull start as well, its like the hydraulic pump is engaged..

Any sugestions and tips would be preciated :confused2:

How does it start if you short across the solenoid? I assume that with that small of an engine, that the solenoid isn't integral to the starter and it is possible for them to build up gunk inside the solenoid that prevents them from passing the full current through.

Its the same when I`m short it across the solenoid.
When I check the voltage when I try to start it, its quite common that it drops to 6-8V just as I turn the key.

I`ve tried to change the cables, to make sure its not losing to much power through the wires, but to no use..

I`m not sure if I used the old or new solenoid. I would assume I used a new one But I`ll head out to the garage and double check it:confused2:

Try jumping from the negative post on the battery to the engine with a heavy set of jumper cables, then from the positive terminal to the hot lead on the starter. If that fixes it, its the cables or the relay.

I`ve tried it, with no difference..

I also doubel checked the solenoid. It looks like its a new one. And when I shorted it, it was the same as before..

If you pull the starter motor out, how well does it spin over (when not spinning the motor)?
If you disconnect the hot wire from the starter how many volts does it have when you turn the key over?
New solenoids have been known to be bad before...

If it pulls over hard by hand then I don't think it's your starter. Can you remove what ever is attached to the motor? If so then see how hard it turns over. If it's still hard then you know it's an issue with the engine.

Its a small hydraulic pump atached to the engine.

Its always engaged to the engine, but the oil is going stright to return to the tank. And when it starts, it will run fine forever.
I dont know if its suposed to be engaged, or if it should be in some kind of neutral when its getting started?

I`m using the dumper now, but I`ll have to check this out during the winter.
