Starting problem on 2001D

A friend of mine just bought a 2001D tractor a few weeks ago. He decided to do a little maintenance on it and changed the air filter, oil and oil filter, and also the fuel filter. I guess he wasn't real familiar with diesels, with this being his first one. He didn't bleed the air out of the fuel lines. He tried to start the tractor up. Well, it gets worse. He sprayed a little bit of ether to get it started. He finally got it started and said it ran fine and he worked it for about an hour, and it ran great. Now he said it still won't crank. I am thinking he may have messed up the compression rings when he sprayed the ether. Since it ran fine after he finally got it running I am thinking the air should be out of the feul system. What do you guys think?

I think you may be right if his tractor now smokes.

If all the conditions are correct, ambient temperature, lack of lubrication from not using the decompression on initial startup and adding a blast of ether can (and does) destroy critical engine components. The rings and cylinder walls are often the first to go...

I think he should bleed it and find out.

Runing it want take out the air. You have to bleed the lines.

I'd have to agree with mark, I think there is at least ring damage. I know my 2000 one I could get it running would run all day, but smoke. when I took it apart the ring were non-existent.

Bleed it to be sure there is no air in the lines.

Thanks guys. I will forward this information to my buddy. I think he has ordered a compression gauge. I will tell hem to bleed the fuel lines to be sure no air is there and he can do a compression test when his gauge gets here. Thanks again.
