I'm starting an apple orchard in the coming year, and of course even after planting, I won't really need harvesting equipment for a few years. However, I'm having a hard time finding apple harvesting equipment in the mid-Atlantic (Maryland) region. My apples will be juiced (then turned into hard cider), so I need a shaker and floor picker. I won't be hiring (don't want to hire) lots of labor to pick the apples, as I don't care about cosmetics. Every bit of equipment I've found is made in the UK, France, or Netherlands. I have a small bit of land (20 acres), so importing equipment, that has zero local support, doesn't seem like a good idea. Even in the midwest / north, it seems the recommendation is a ladder. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm about to bone up on my welding and hydraulics.
