Using a 4.5" x 30" cyl. Beam is large but free.

HA that was just a piece of it. I was 32' long. It has been it the yard of a customer for 15 years. They said If I took it away and didn't trash the yard, I could have it.

I hope you did not mind as I had a look at your shop. Did you purchase the end bracket premade because I am going by the sticky label? Once you make the first splitter you know where to get the rest of the beams.

Yes the cylinder tie down bracket is also a northern tool part. I believe it will be the week link in this system. I plan on adding some weld and a backer spine (so to speak).

I am subscribed to this thread. Are you going to make it rotate so you can pickup chunks if you want?

Well I am not sure what you are asking, but my initial plan was to mount it knife down , with the length sticking out the front of the skid steer. But the weight of this thing scares me a bit and with a big log hanging out there at 90" or so I don't think my 2000 lb capacity would pick it up. I only plan on running this from inside the cab. Today my son and I discussed mounting it 90 deg to the path of the skid steer. This would bring the weight in close to the machine and may have some advantages in secondary splitting. We have a large OWB and only need pieces small enough to load.

Mark--I am going to follow this closely, so take good pics. How do I 'subscribe' to a thread ?? I have a Bobcat 742B that would look awfully good with a splitter out front. My concern about mounting a splitter like a bale spear isn't so much about weight, as visibility. With the splitter mounted cross-wise, knife down, you would have an excellent view of each victim. Good luck, and several us are rooting for you.

Do you have high flow on your skid steer? What size are the ports on the cylinder?

I am watching this too. As I am still contemplating stand alone or skid steer mounted. I am asuming by your design you intend to build an adjustable wedge behind the single wedge. How do you intend to hydraulicaly adjust the wedge? My skid steer only has one set of outputs. I am very interested in your build.

Chuck, Bobcat is low flow 16 gpm I believe. Ports on cylinder are 1/2".

Rio, you give me too much credit. Although I will add a secondary wedge it will be fixed, probably a 2x3" angle iron. The piece behind the wedge is to try to take some of the splitting pressure off the 1/2" x 8" plate that the wedge is welded to and distribute it to the web of the beam. The v shaped gap will be filled with a thin pie shaped piece and welded in.

Tree I believe you subscribe by choosing an e-mail notification at the bottom of the reply to a thread page.

This weekend was spent drilling and bolting the cylinder tie down and cutting material for the pushing sled.

Here are a few pictures of SS splitters. Might get some new ideas.

Ok, well I had to take a week to plow some Ice and snow. I have gotten the cylinder tie down attached and did a whole lot of hole boring to fabricate the base for the pushing sled.

1grnlwn - your mag drill is getting a workout! Question - is the beveled steel strip under the I beam web available commercially? And did you use that same material reversed as a guide for the slider? All the wear my old splitter has is where the slider moves along the beam. I assume you tacked and bolted that together so you could replace worn parts? Nice fabrication.

Jimmy, First of all the cyl tie down is shimmed with beveled washers. They are made to use when you need to bolt something to a beam. They came from Fastenal and are about a buck a piece. The slider slides on a 1/2" x 8" flat bar that is stitch welded to the top of the beam. I am toying with the idea of putting some grease zerks in high wear places. To be honest the bolted slider is just copied from many of the splitter designs I have seen. It does give the flexibility of adjusting "fit" when needed. As far as the mag drill is concerned, it is my latest addition to the shop and I can't imagine trying to align and drill all those 5/8" holes with my wimpy drill press. P.S. it still took a long time to drill all that, messy too!
