I've seen what either can do to pistons/ cylinders...so I don't recommend it...

I just heard from a friend that a diesel mechanic he knows recommended using silicone spray lubricant...?

Anyone ever hear or use it...I know wd40 works on gas engines...

small amounts of ether are just the same!

JD dozers used to be fitted with a "starting aid" fitting at the operator station.

Can no one follow directions?!!!

Our mechanic recommends soaking a rag with gasoline and hold it in front of the air intake.

Ford did also - but at least on my 3000, ford also used pistons with a heavy duty top ring support - That may have something to do with how these engines seem to survive when others were damaged the first time ether was introduced...

On a cold morning when i need the tractor running Now,
I will use a (small ) shot of ether on the Ford, but no way on my chinese rhino - luckily the rhino starts down to about 15* without using the block heater

I think the small amount of starting fluid needed to start an old tractor is much safer than trying to hold a gasoline soaked rag in front of the air cleaner.

Our Case CX80 OEM "cold starting kit" used a remotely triggered can of ether.

It's all in the air to fuel ratio for combustion for a given gas. Does the ether can directions tell what A/F ratio your engine is getting. I doubt it by squirting by seconds measurement.
Prestone
Hold can upright and spray a 1 to 2 second burst into air intake or carburetor. Do not let can contact battery terminals or starter solenoid. Avoid excessive application. 2. With air cleaner and cover in place, start engine. Do not spray while trying to start engine. 3. If engine fails to start after repeating steps 1 and 2 several times, have ignition system checked. Do not use in diesel engines with glow plugs (See owner's manual). Contains an upper cylinder lubricant.

QUICK START SITE
Precision flow is achieved by testing, calculation, sizing, and placement. A small amount of a premium ether-based blend is delivered from the cylinder through a micron filter, through a metering device into the delivery tube, and finally through the atomizer which is fitted in the intake air stream of the diesel engine. The atomized ether blend is injected into the air inlet incoming air steam and drawn into the engine combustion chamber (engine cylinder). The atomized ether/air mixture will ignite and burn as it is being compressed, raising the temperature in the combustion chamber to a point high enough for complete ignition of the injected diesel fuel. Cold-testing at +50 F to -50 F has resulted in complete startup in 3 to 7 seconds.

They still do. As does the excavators, dozers, backhoes, rubbered tire front loaders etc. Moderate shots of either doesn't hurt a diesel. Just be sensable about the shot. Don't either lock the engine or squirt a can in at a time.

Sensible is good

- just don't do what that character did on one of the last (Gold Rush) series shows .

That guy just kept spraying ether non stop into a Volvo diesel engine. Myself and others watching were just waiting for the engine to start and run away -which is what it did do- along with catching on fire - What a waste...

That whole show is a farce. Claims of about to loose their house etc but have money to have brand new trucks, a $100K+ trackhoe, dozer, money to build that huge separator etc. If they had put all that money into paying their bills, then they wouldn't have a problem. Most (no all) of those reality shows are drama staged acts to make them a bit more interesting. I watched the Gold rush a couple of times but quickly saw that it is just trash show like all the others. Networks love them because they are cheap to produce and lots of folks seem to love them. The watchers must not have any life of their own to have to watch that crap. RANT OVER>

Most ether starting systems say to use a 2 second burst which is basically a measured amount. If you do more it will lock up the engine on most tractors.
