I have reading alot of postings about starter motor troubles. To give you idea of what I do, I work as an electrician but I am good at taking things apart and getting them back together. I studied motors in college and part of the course was auto electric ie starter motors. Starter motors are something that you should not be afraid to peek into if you are starting to have troubles. Look at this way, you are having troubles and the starter motor is the problem and you managed to wrestle it. At this point you can not make things any worse because the motor is laying on the ground or bench and a thousand thoughts of how am I going to start the tractor are running through your head.
I think The easiest way is I am going to supply links from sites that I think are straight forward because I can not lay out a long photo shoot.

I found 3 easy sites that give good info. Just remember bad battery connections or a bad battery can lead you down the wrong road fast.

I quickly read the Email. To read AC current use a AC type current meter they have open jaw and the classic closable jaw. To read DC current a DC clamp-on is needed and the meter uses the ( Hall Effect ) to read DC current. The meter uses power from a battery to generate a field and the DC field does something and reading is generated.
I have all the above in our shop. You can also do a voltage/current ascross as shunt.
