In the last couple of days my TC29D is starting funny. It will start right off no problems then about 15 to 20 seconds after it starts it will cut out and catch itself and keep doing that for about a minute. Just sits there cutting out and catching itself. Even if I follow the start up procedures of having the throttle cracked a bit it still does it. Blue smoke will bellow out while doing this also. The air filters and fuel filter was changed out about twenty hours ago. It sits in a warm garage 40 to 50 degrees. During the winter months which I usually put in fuel conditioner which I have been doing now for the last three tanks.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I just have to respond to the TC29D guys. Have you changed fuel sources? I am not one to know, as I am really new at the diesel thing, but it sounds like water in the fuel. Could this be a possibility?

My first thought would also be water in the fuel, and don't get upset at my asking this, but could you possibly have added some gas/oil mix to your diesel by mistake?

It shouldn't be water as the bowl shows no sign of water plus the fact the last three tanks of fuel I have added conditioner to it which is suppose the take care of the water. I will double check the bowl again and see if I can see any water in it.

If it was water would it not continue all the time or wouldn't I keep getting the large amounts of smoke??

I actually have no idea what the problem is, but my first thought would be something not right with the governor?

Murph, I know this is a long shot, but since you just changed the air filters, is there a chance you put the inner filter in backwards. If so, it will partially block off airflow (kinda like choking) when the engine is cold, and when the engine warms up, cause it to spit and sputter. I only suggest this because I put mine in backwards once when my tractor was new. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

What happens if you give it more throttle? does it rev up? Black belching smoke is rich runnign, check to make sure some mice havn't made a nest in the air filter..

Jinman,

It is possible that it is in backwards, but it was the dealer that put them in and also why didn't it do it twenty hours ago? But I will check that.

Kris,

Hope you can see since I am replying to Jinmans but if I open the throttle up is just kills. The smoke coming out is blueish white.

Sounds like it's either getting way too much fuel, or not enough air. Good luck, I'd get the dealer in on this one.

Murph, the sound you hear is me "grasping at straws" trying to come up with something simple that could cause your problem. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Also, you mentioned adding fuel additive. Could that be the source of problems? I don't know about colder climates, but I've put 227,000 miles on my diesel pickup and 500+ hours on my tractor and never experienced a fuel problem. If you buy fuel that already has additives because of your climate, could adding more "stuff" cause your fuel to have problems?

I'm just thinking out loud, Murph. I hope it's not something mechanical like the governor problem Bird mentioned. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
