A lot of discussion on Cultivator and Tillers recently, just thought I would throw this out to see if anyone has accomplished what I intend to do.
I have a horse drawn spring tooth harrow it has c tines that will rotateup or down to cultivate with handles to accomplish this feat. It is 6 feet wide or aproximately with a total of 12 tines that all have small plows attached to the end of each. It also is flexible in the middle.
I intend to construct a three point hitch so i can raise and lower this at the fields end. I can pull but must keep going in circles or get off to raise the tines. Small areas is difficult.
I have used this as a pull type with tractor on new turn sod and it does break up the sod and smooth the soil good.
Has anyone ever attached a three point hitch to a horse drawn spring tooth harrow?
I've never made a rigid connection, but once I attached the harrow to the end of my boompole and was able to lift it. I have two 3' sections that are supposed to fit together, but they are made differently and I just wrapped chain around them to hold them together (attachment). For me the boompole is the best solution, but if you have the time and materials, you could surely come up with a "fix."

The right side looks just like mine. However I have the other side just like it.
Was yours from two different ones? Never thought of using the boom pole but it would be a lot eaiser may try it before doing all that work. Thanks
They were both inherited from my father, so I have no idea how long he had them or where he got them. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

We have several of these that have accumulated over the years of trading in the machinery business. (We call them section harrows here in Ky) The boom pole really works well for making these portable. We also have customers that use the boom pole to serve the same purpose in the use of chain harrows--Ken Sweet

Around here we call them a drag and use them to smooth after a field has been plowed, disc, and then draged. I have a 8ft one that is 3pt and is very handy. It should be very easy to adapt one to 3pt.

I tried bolting a section to my carry all, but it doesn't work well. In order to keep all the teeth in the ground you need an automatic top link. I tried making one of them from a hydraulic cylinder but it wasn't quick enough acting.

I just got to thinking of how to attach the boom pole at the same time being able to pull it. I presume the boom pole is attached womewhere in the center to lift and a chain to do the pulling once lowered. Is this correct?

( boom pole is attached somewhere in the center to lift and a chain to do the pulling once lowered )

That's essentially correct. The chain from the boom pole goes to the center and sides of the harrow or harrows so they are held stable when lifted, and chains on the front of the harrow attach to the lower part of the boom pole to provide an even tow when the harrow is lowered to the ground. With all this chain, it's easy to get everything tangled and into a mess. Mostly I use the lift chains to haul the harrow to the field where I want to use it. When I get to my location, I lower the harrow and re-rig for pulling. I just make a large arch for turning. This method doesn't lend itself to lifting and lowering at the end of each row. The lifting is just for transport.
