It's that time again; the clocks will be changing.

And, it is time to check out your smoke detectors. They should be cleaned and checked for functionality. It is a great time to put fresh batteries in. Our Fire District recomends replacing the batteries at the fall and spring time changes.

Check out your manual for manufacturer and model specific requirements and recomendations.

Where I live, we never change the clock. Does that mean I don't need to change the smoke alarm batteries?

Most fire agencies recommend checking and/or changing the batteries twice a year. Since most areas have the time change, most agencies have used those dates as a good time to do it; as long as someone is changing the clock, check the smoke detector too.

One other thing I didn't mention before, most smoke detectors have a life expectancy; they vary by brand and model. If the detector itself gets old, it might not function properly.
