Spring maintenance 1971 Ford 4000 - What should I look for?

Hello all

Lately, i noticed my tractor was more "smelly" then usual. I had it for 2 years now and besides making sure the oil is OK i didnt do much on it. I will change all the oils and filters this spring but im wondering if its a good idea to change the injectors and if that would help the combustion. I burn around 40 gal. of fuel per year in the field when baling and when clearing my driveway.

Injectors last many 1000s of hours. To function properly they need to squirt a high pressure mist from the half a dozen (give or take) nozzles on the tip of the injector. Over time those nozzles can become clogged and the mist pattern is disrupted or other things in the fuel preventing complete combustion......just like todays fuel injected gas engines.

I keep an injector cleaning additive in my diesel. Over the years I have settled on Power Services brand fuel treatment....in the grey plastic container available at WW and most auto parts stores. Other thing you might do is replace your fuel filters ever so-often. If you use clean, fresh fuel your fuel filters will last a very long time. One of the functions of the fuel filter assembly is to trap water that may be in the fuel. This requires draining the filter assembly if you suspect water contamination and some dual filter assemblies are even clear with out a filter on the inlet and a filter in the second assembly. This allows you to see if you have any water in the fuel, which can be drained right there at that filter assy.

Many, many, many inj. pump failures are from people not changing fuel filters often enough..
Its CHEAP insurance..
..a COUPLE $20.00 filters EVERY year, will save u hundreds if not thousands of dollars in fuel system work & down-time...
I tell my customers to do it 2x a year..
