There is a previous post titled Help !!! Fire Ants !!! that I considered attaching this post to. However this is really more about spreaders as I'm already using a particular product for RIFA.
I use Extinguish Plus to control the fire ants. This was based on the recommendation of the wildlife biologist that helped get my land registered for “wildlife management”, a type of Ag exemption here in Texas.
I had been doing spot applications which worked O.K. in the woods, but I’ve recently acquired some acreage that is much more open. I bought 100 little orange survey flags and started marking which mounds I’d treated. After running out of flags and still having several acres left to go I’ve decided that maybe spot applications simply weren’t going to get the job done.
One of the spreaders that the literature for Extinguish Plus recommends (and the only practical one for my land) is the Kasco Herd Sure-Feed GT-77. I’d probably use the Kawasaki Mule to mount it to.
Using a spreader Extinguish Plus says to apply at a rate of 1 to 1.5 lbs per acre.
Now spreaders have always driven me crazy because unless you’re using a product branded the same as the spreader (Scott, Ortho) you basically have to guess at the feed rate. Or, maybe that's just me.
The Kasco Herd Sure-Feed GT-77 has a minimum opening of 1/32” to spread a pound of Ladino Clover over an acre in 28 foot strips traveling at 4 mph.
I have no idea if Ladino Clover seeds and Extinguish Plus particles are the same size and I doubt I could keep the Mule at 4 mph.
So, here I am asking for information and recommendations from all those that have come before me that have dealt with spreaders, fire ant killer, and hopefully the two combined.
