Oil & Fuel Specs for 98 John Deere 870

Hi everyone. Just became the proud owner of an 870, which should fill the bill for me pretty well. I have ordered an owners manual for it, but it won't be here for about a week.

Can anyone provide me with the fluid capacities and specifications for the 870? Looking for engine, transmission, axle, PTO, power steering pump.

Also, it appears that the fuel injection pump (front right side of engine) has an oil resevoir, what oil goes into that, and how much of it? There is no dipstick on the cap, but it sure looks low, how high is the level supposed to be?

Can anyone tell me what kind of oil the injection pump uses? It does not have a dipstick, just an oil fill reservoir. Don't know how much oil should be in there, nor what kind it should use.

I have an 870. Not sure what year it is but I bought in new in 1997. There are only two places to check the oil level on a 2 wheel drive. The dipstick for engine oil and the dipstick for transmission oil. If you have 4wd then there is a oil level dipstick for the front axle.The injector pump is lubricated with clean fuel and maybe engine oil from behind. Nothing to fill. There is a fuel filter up there and another one back under the fuel tank. 8.5 gallon fuel tank. I get 6 gallons which fills it up pretty full. 5.5 quarts of antifreeze mix. 5.1 quarts of engine oil. Hydraulic fluid is 5.5 gallons. PTO runs in the hydraulic fluid bath that also services power steering and the loader if you have one.

I run Shell engine oil for diesels. I think it is called Rotella. I happen to use the synthetic version but regular works fine. I get my oil and fuel filters from the JD dealer. The hydraulic/tranny fluid is JD Low Viscosity Hy-Gard or meeting JDMJ20B spec.

That's what has me stumped. There is some kind of oil reservoir with filler cap right at the front of the injection pump. I am no expert on diesels, but I have never seen that before. It appears to not have much oil (or whatever it contains) in it.

Mine is a 2WD. I run Rotella in my old military Deuce and a Half, it's good stuff. I think the viscosity is different, but I like the brand.

The oil fill in front of the injection pump is for engine oil. There are two oil fills on the engine. The other one is on the valve cover. Either one can be used. They put two on because the engine is used in other applications besides on tractors. In some applications, one or the other oil fill may not be accessible.

Jim, go back to my previous post where I linked the URL for the JD 870 on tractordata.com. It includes a list of all the serial numbers and their respective year model of production. You should be able to take your serial number and determine the year of production with it.

My serial number indicates it's a 1998 model. Just wish I had more time to get familiar with the tractor, but my yard is soaked, and there's tons of other stuff to do. I really need to level out some ground and do some brush hogging.
