Don't know if I should purchase turf guard oil or a other brand for my John deere lt150

I've not heard of "turf guard oil". Use what is recommended in your Op Manual. Remember - no manufacturer can require that you use their specific brand. They CAN recommend that whatever oil you should choose meets their minimum specifications.

I use JD Turf Guard in my X739. Its not very expensive at the dealer and my engine only uses 2 quarts per year so why not use the recommended oil. If it was hard to find or extremely expensive I would just use an equivalent.

If you buy the John Deere maintenance kit it will come with Turf Guard oil. I will sometimes buy the kit if its on sale since it comes with air, fuel, oil filters and spark plugs for my machine.

But who makes Turf Gard for JD? John Deere is not in the oil business, it comes from one of the major refineries. I use Valvoline in everything I own, always have and always will. Valvoline is the only major brand that refines it's own from crude (Ashland Oil Co.) and is only sold under the Valvoline brand. Gastrol, Quaker State, Penz, Mobil, Turf Guard etc all by their oil from a major refiner and add dyes and other additives and sell it under their name brand. "People who know, use Valvoline"

1979 Chevy step side-430,000 miles same engine, 1991 Isuzu pickup-326,000 miles same engine, 2002 Yukon-270,000 miles same engine, JD x300-805 hours. Nuff said.

I only use AMSOIL Synthetic Oil in my X738. Have no use for JD oils, they are just repackaged oil company brands, e.g. Esso (Canada), Chevron and Philips 66.

You present only part of the information.. am somewhat familiar with the John Deere oil lab that is very intensive in the formulation of its oils.. contracted out to oil companies.. to JD specs. Not just a label change either.

Just tell the whole story..

But each of us can use whatever oil we like.. for whatever reason.
Cheaper is not necessarily a good reason. But if it works for you, fine.

The idea that somehow the engine in my X738 (Kawasaki) needs a special oil designed by JD is ludicrous. OEM brand oils are minimum requirement aka good enough lubricants. There's obviously better made lubricants on today's market that meet and exceed OEM and do a much better job.

People IMO who swear by OEM lubricants are no more than fear mongering that everything else is just oil. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Regardless of what brand oil is stated or advertised by the OEM, these oils are nothing more than contracts that go to the lowest bidder. It doesn't mean by any means they are indeed the absolute best.

Recommending the best oil has never been the goal of any oem manufacturer, rather it’s a business decision. OEM’s recommendations are marketed to persuade buyers and even induce fear. It’s a business deal for the OEM to increase profits, not a quality deal for the consumer.

The JD dealer that I bought my mower from told me that JD would not stand behind the warranty on my new X300 if I did not use JD oil. Well, I called John Deere offices and found out that it was not true as long as I used an acceptable grade and type of oil that met the engine manufacturer specs. I know this can be a Chevy vs Ford debate on oil brands but I am completely sold on Valvoline products, conventional and synthetic. There may be other brands as good but none better.
